Martin V. Melosi, Cullen University Professor of History and Executive Director of the Center for Public History just returned from a speaking tour in China conducted between late November and early December, 2016. He served as a visiting professor in the Institute of the History and Philosophy of Science at Beijing Normal University, where he gave several lectures on urban environmental and energy history in a Workshop on Environmental History and Civilization, and gave the keynote address at the International Forum on Waste and Civilization. He also was invited to give lectures on energy, urban, and public history at Renmin University, Peking University, and Tsinghua University, all in Beijing. The four universities are considered among the most prestigious in China. Melosi then flew to Ningbo, where he gave lectures on urban environmental and energy history at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, the most important English-language university in China. The trip was an outstanding opportunity to share ideas with a wide variety of students, faculty, journalists, and NGO staff, and to bring information about the University of Houston to China. Currently, Dr. Melosi is mentoring two PhD students from Chinese universities at UH as part of a cultural exchange.
