Artists and artist-centered organizations have shaped contemporary attitudes, initiated bold ventures and changed prevailing thought. In Houston, with its culture of entrepreneurship and its vibrant arts community, numerous examples exist of how artists and arts organizations have taken leadership roles in communities. By raising awareness to needs, redefining the discourse and inspiring new public and private initiatives, effective arts leadership can have impact far beyond the economic.
December 6 at noon, and 6 & 7 at 7:30 p.m. @ Quintero Theatre -An entire evening of new works choreographed, lit, designed and produced by SOTD students. The University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance is known for producing some of Houston’s most well known young choreographic and dance talent - don't miss seeing the rising stars of tomorrow!
Saturday, December 7th, 6:30PM @Eldorado Ballroom, 2310 Elgin - A live performance by Theaster Gates and the Black Monks of Mississippi, an experimental music ensemble of Chicago-based vocalists and musicians founded in 2008. Directed by Gates, the music is influenced by diverse traditions, including Gospel, Blues and Buddhist and Zen chants. Co-presented by Blaffer Art Museum, Project Row Houses, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. Free and open to all.
