The SLPA certificate program curriculum is not a degree granting program. You will earn a certificate at the conclusion of the program. You will not obtain a second Bachelor's degree. You will not be eligible to apply to a graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders (ComD) because the courses in the SLPA certificate program are specifically geared toward working as an SLPA, and you will be missing some of the prerequisite courses for the UH graduate program in ComD.
The UH SLPA certificate program curriculum consists of five semesters, and should be taken in sequence.
Listed below are critical aspects of the SLPA certificate program that you need to be aware of:
1. You must begin in the Fall semester.
2. All of the courses are offered during the late afternoon or evening. Clinical observation and training will be offered during the day. If you work during the day, you will need to adjust you work schedule to accommodate the observation and training (4th and 5th semesters of the program) requirements.
3. The SLPA certificate program does not lead to the attainment of the Texas State Teaching Certificate (additional coursework is required). It does lead to the attainment of the state license for a speech-language pathology assistant. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/speech/default.shtm Licensure is the law. You may not work as a speech-language pathology assistant without a license in the state of Texas.
