Dr. Ashwini Joshi is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Houston. Dr. Joshi received her doctorate from the University of Kentucky in Rehabilitation Sciences. Her research interests focus on voice and voice disorders. Her doctoral research examined the effects of vocal fold paralysis on various brain regions and its corresponding manifestation on parameters of voice assessment. Prior to starting at the University of Houston, Dr. Joshi worked clinically with adults with acquired speech and language disorders.

Teaching

Anatomy & Physiology for Communication (COMD 2376)

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the anatomical and physiological structures and functions involved in speech and swallowing. Students will study the muscular and neurological systems of respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance and deglutition in a normal human system and the effects of a disordered system.

Research Interests

The primary focus of Dr. Joshi’s research is to understand the role of the brain in voice production and the changes seen in the brain as a result of disordered voice and its treatment.
