Application Form

Study Trip Course:

Students will enroll in GIS 3300:  Interdisciplinary India:  Study Abroad  (GIS stands for Global and International Studies.)  The Winter Term starts December 20th with online lectures, assigned reading and viewing.  We depart for India on December 27th.  While in India, we will visit Mumbai, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra, Khajuraho, Varanasi, and Delhi.  Students will study the history and culture of these sites, learn by observing, listening, reading, participating, and submitting a final project that reflects their academic interests and disciplinary objectives. We will be in India from December 27, 2014 through January 14, 2015.

India Studies Scholarship Deadlines:
Priority consideration, May 15, 2014, awards announced June 1st
Final Deadline, September 1, 2014, awards announced October 1st
University Scholarship (IEFS) Deadline:  October 1, 2014

Cost:

The cost is $3200, which includes round-trip airfare, all accommodations (double occupancy), meals, and programming in India.

Substantial scholarships are available on a competitive basis, with preference given to:

  • India Studies minors
  • Students who have taken at least one course in India Studies
  • Students who will take an India Studies course before going to India

Application to the Program:

Download the application form and submit it electronically to indiastudies@uh.edu along with the following documents:

  • Proof of good academic standing 
  • A personal statement describing your interest and future goals; if you are applying for India Studies Scholarship help, please include a statement about your financial need
  • A recommendation letter from a faculty member with whom you’ve studied

PAYMENT:  Once you have been accepted into the Study Abroad program, please go to the Anthony Travel website here, where you will reserve your place, and pay for the trip.  You will make your first payment of $1,200 on this website when you are accepted, or by July 31. This will reserve your place on the trip.  The second payment of $1,000 is due on August 27, and the third and final payment on October 31.  
 
Students accepted later than August 27 must make the first and second payments ($2100) to assure your place on the trip.

India Studies Scholarships: Scholarships up to $2000 available.

University of Houston Study Abroad Scholarship (IEFS):  Deadline:  October 1, 2014

Elephant Howdah

Some funding is automatically available to UH students studying abroad.  The amount varies, but everyone should apply.  Go to www.uh.edu/studyabroad, select Scholarships, and then IEFS Online Application. Submit the application online, print and sign it, then go to the Office of Study Abroad, 501 E. Cullen building.  You will need 2 sealed letters of reference from UH faculty or staff, one sealed official transcript, a statement of between 800 and 1,000 words explaining why you want to study abroad, and a flier from the India Studies Study Abroad Program.

The UH Study Abroad Office charges $50 to see to your international student card and additional paperwork required by the University.
