As summer comes to a close and we prepare for a new academic year, I want to take this opportunity to welcome CLASS faculty, staff, and students back to the campus of the University of Houston. I want to especially welcome our 23 new dynamic CLASS faculty members, whose diverse areas of expertise in research and teaching will help CLASS continue to spur intellectual curiosity and creativity, resulting in a transformative education for our students.
I also want to acknowledge our 1025 new incoming freshman, 1738 new transfer students (as in from other academic institutions), 152 new masters’ students, and 56 new doctoral students. We are excited that you have chosen CLASS as your new home for higher learning; and, we look forward to the contributions that you will make to our college. I am confident you will help CLASS continue to build upon its academic excellence in the areas of humanities, social sciences, and health disciplines.
As I approach my first year anniversary (in February 2018) as the Dean of CLASS, I recognize that this is an exciting time for us. I work alongside over 500 CLASS faculty members that educate nearly 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students in 14 different departments and programs to identify top CLASS priorities. The strategic process is well underway – prioritized goals include increasing academic excellence/enhancing student success, research support for faculty, and increasing faculty diversity. Many initiatives are in the process, which I will share during this year’s CLASS General Faculty Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 14 at 4 p.m. in the Graduate College of Social Work, Room 101.
Again, welcome back, and I wish you an exciting and productive academic year.
Dr. Antonio D. Tillis, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
