Annual Scholarship Banquet

The University of Houston African American Studies Annual Scholarship Banquet, Embarking Upon 45 Years of Excellence was held, Friday, May 3, 2013 at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel, 6:30 pm -10:00 pm. The Scholarship Banquet was supported by several businesses and individuals in the Houston community, thanks to those generous donors, 17 deserving students were awarded scholarships.

In addition to awarding students, the Scholarship Banquet also recognized University of Houston Alumni who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, community service and commitment to student success. The Alumni Honorees for the 2013 Scholarship Banquet were: Mrs. Sonceria Messiah-Jiles, CEO Defender Media Group; Larry Green, J.D. City Council Member; Dr. Bernard Harris, President of Harris Foundation, Physician & Retired Astronaut; and Mr. John Lucas, National Basketball League Retired Coach and Player.
