Bassem Youssef presents The Joke is Mightier Than the Sword
Monday, May 1, 2017
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Egyptian surgeon-turned-satirist Bassem Youssef, dubbed the “Jon Stewart of the Arab World,” is coming to the University of Houston.
Youssef was the host of the political satire TV show AlBernameg, the first of its kind in the Middle East. He got his start humbly on YouTube with The B+ Show, but soon soared to popularity. AlBernameg grew to be the most watched show in Egypt with 30 million viewers tuning in every week. It aired from 2011 to 2014, remaining controversial with its humorous yet bold criticisms of the ruling powers. Despite receiving unprecedented viewership ratings, AlBernameg was cancelled in its third season due to lawsuits and overwhelming pressure on the show and the airing channel.
Youssef was named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by TIME Magazine in 2013. Recent projects include a series exploring topics of democracy called "Democracy Handbook" and the launch of his book "Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring."
