Blaffer Fall Exhibitions
Friday, September 7, 2018
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Blaffer Art Museum presents the opening reception for two exhibitions this fall, Richard Rezac: Address and Alfred Leslie: One Hundred Characters in Search of a Reader.
Richard Rezac: Address
On view through December 8, 2018
Chicago sculptor Richard Rezac makes his wood and metal sculptures by hand, combining meticulous geometry with a deep feeling for color and form. Richard Rezac: Address brings together 20 mostly recent works made of materials such as cherry wood, cast bronze, and aluminum, along with drawings on paper. Inviting multiple readings, these simultaneously strange and familiar objects demonstrate the artists ongoing engagement with mathematical ordering systems and the elusive mechanisms of memory and interpretation. Richard Rezac and curator Solveig Ãvstebø will present a gallery walkthrough during the opening reception.
Alfred Leslie: One Hundred Characters in Search of a Reader
On view through January 26, 2019
Alfred Leslie has earned international acclaim for his achievements in film, painting, drawing, and poetry. Beginning his career as an Abstract Expressionist painter, he earned early recognition his large, brushy images, often on unstretched canvas. As a filmmaker, Leslie collaborated with the photographer Robert Frank and the poet and curator Frank OHara, respectively, to make two iconic works of the Beat Generation: Pull My Daisy, 1959, and The Last Clean Shirt, 1964. Leslies magazine The Hasty Papers, which included collaborations between artists and writers, including John Ashbery, Jean Genet, Jack Kerouac, Alice Neel, among many others, served as an exciting, interdisciplinary provocation when published in 1960. Jane Dale Owen Director and Chief Curator Toby Kamps will present an introduction at 6:30 p.m.
