BTI Summer Research Program

What is the BTI Summer Research Program?

Participate in a summer research project with BTI. For 10 weeks from June 6^th and August 12^th, participants engage in workshops, tours, mentorship, research, and experiential learning. Each student is assigned a faculty mentor. Cross-disciplinary research provides an opportunity to network, expand awareness, and apply learning to current complex issues. Each participant that successfully complete the internship will receive a $5,000.00 stipend.

Summer Research Program Interns will be expected to work independently and as a member of a team, perform guided research, develop materials including reports, action plans, and presentations. Interns will also assist with the implementation of new programs as well as developing training material.

Summer Research Opportunities

The Borders, Trade and Immigration Institute is actively engaged in across a variety of content areas. Examples of project areas include the prevention of human trafficking, border security unmanned aerial systems, and technology / policy issues related to transnational flows of goods, people, and data,

The BTI Institute (www.uh.edu/bti) has multiple research opportunities for undergraduate students. We are seeking interns interested in furthering research in these areas and produce supporting materials for information dissemination across a variety of platforms. These include web pages, reports, and educational materials to enhance community safety and resilience.

The benefits to the intern are exciting and important. They include working with a great team of homeland security professionals who care deeply about: producing quality work; developing expertise in an evolving and complex field; and helping to produce reports, action plans, job aids, and exercises. In return the intern should bring essential skills to this position: excellent communication skills, attention to detail, the ability to work independently on important projects, and most importantly, a strong interest in supporting national security to promote economic and social development.

Requirements

Participants must be current students of higher education at a two-year or four-year regionally accredited institution. Preference will be given for scholastic achievement, motivation and abilities.

Excellent written and oral communications, and attention to detail are important. Interns need to be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Participants are required to participate in-person at the University of Houston Main Campus for 10 weeks from June 5, 2017 through August 11, 2017.
