...know the class section?

For classes and seminars and research hours search within myUH (PeopleSoft) (see above) or use the following link:

UH Course Listing

As of Fall 2007 the section numbers for research hours ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN BINDERS in the mail rooms. You will now find them within myUH (PeopleSoft) where you go to register/enroll for classes. Search for the course number, for example BIOL6398, and then find the section that corresponds to the professor who is the Chair of your committee. If you do not find a section number for a particular course and your professor, please email Ms. Paul (akpaul@uh.edu). First year students sign up for sections under either Dr. Widger (BCHS), Dr. Briggs (CBIP), or Dr. Amy Sater (CMB). First year E&E students sign up for sections under the professor with whom they are working.

...pay my fee bill (online)?

Click on the following link, login and go to Student Financials in UH Self-Service (as of Fall 2007):

myUH (PeopleSoft)   (Help)

The University has become VERY stringent about payment of your fee bill. If you have not paid or made arrangements to pay your fee bill by the DUE DATE, you will be automatically DROPPED from your courses. Your GATF and tuition waivers alone will not keep you enrolled. You will need to pay $20 to be re-instated. Please do not take this lightly, and plan ahead to make your payments on time.

...apply for dental insurance AND life insurance?

There is a way you can get free Dental Insurance and Life insurance through UH benefits. The ability to get free dental and life insurance is done by selecting the opt-out option for the employee health insurance. Once the opt-out choice is selected, UH gives that person an extra $30 each month to use for dental and life insurance plans. Since most graduate students have the student health insurance they are missing out on $30 free dollars a month since they already do not get the Employee Health Insurance.

To get the $30 Benefit Credit to use for Dental and Life Insurance.

1. Go to the ERS website https://baka.ers.state.tx.us/psp/bprd/?cmd=login
2. Register if you have not already done so or sign in with your user ID and password.
3. Click on "Benefits Enrollement" which is under "My Insurance Information" on the right of the page.
4. This screen should show a "Open Benefit Events." If not you should call the ERS customer service.
5. Click on the "Select" button.
6. Click on the "Edit" button next to Medical
7. There are three choices. If you use the Student Health Insurance then select "Health Insurance OptOut Credit." Once you do this the "Waive" should be unchecked.
8. Click on the "Store" button.
9. Click in the check box certifying that you are waiving the employee health insurance coverage and to receive the $30 benefit credit.
10. Click the "Submit" button.
11. Click the "OK" button

To get Dental Insurance

1. On the Open Enrollment screen select "Edit" next to Dental.
2. Select the Dental Plan of your choice.
3. Enter any dependents such as a spouse or children. (NOTE: If you have last update Fall 2009 dependents then you will end up paying some money from your check. Dental insurance for only yourself is $22.46 credit but if you have dependents then it will be over your $30 credit.)
4. Click the "Store" button.
5. Click the "OK" button

To get AD&D (Accidental Death and Disability) Life Insurance:

1. On the Open Enrollment screen select "Edit" next to AD&D.
2. Select the coverage you want. ($200,000 in life insurance costs $4.00 a month for one person. With the Member Dental Insurance is $22.46 so you will not have to pay anything for this life insurance due to the $30 credit you received.)

Once you have selected all your benefits you want scroll down on the Open Enrollment page and review the costs you have. If you selected the Health Insurance OptOut, the Member only dental insurance, and the Member only AD&D life insurance then you should see total state contribution at $30 and your cost at $0.

Finally, click the "Submit" button to save everything. You have the last day of Summer Enrollment to make any additional changes. Any unused portion of the opt out credit will not be refunded to you.
