The school year has started and it's time for BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether (HHGT).

For new students - HHGT is now an integral part of our BSGS tradition, and we normally will have it on the first Thursday of every month. It is when the old and new graduate students get to meet, greet, and have some fun!

This Thursday (September 4) we will meet at El Pueblito (1423 Richmond Ave) at 6pm. This place has a very nice patio and serves wonderful food (the fried plantains rock!), great margaritas, beers, and some fruit juices. Happy Hour is until 7pm.

We hope to see as many of you as possible! If you need a ride, feel free to let us know at bsgs@uh.edu.

The new BSGS Officers for the 2008 - 2009 term are Prahathees Eswaramoorthy (President), Eylem Aydogdu (Vice President), Heather Brasher (Secretary), Luz Vela (Treasurer), Ashley Benham (Sports Coordinator) and Rolf Lohaus (Webmaster).

In case you were wondering, there was no need for elections since we had only one candidate for each of the positions.

Please join us for lunch this Thursday, August 14, at 12pm in HSC 102 to welcome the new graduate students. We will have free pizza and drinks for everybody.

July is here and it's time for this month's BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether! This Thursday (July 3) we will meet at Azteca's Margarita Bar & Grill in Montrose (2207 Richmond Ave) at 7pm. We will have a table on the patio.
Their Happy Hour specials (until 8pm) are $3 margaritas, $3 well drinks, $3 well shots and $3 flavoritas (whatever that means...).

Please join us for the last Happy Hour GetTogether of the Spring semester this Thursday (May 1) at 6:30pm at Hans' Village Bier and Vino Haus (2523 Quenby, Rice Village). They have a wide selection of domestic and imported beers and fine wines, great outdoor seating in the expansive biergarten, and one of Houston's only bocce courts.
The Thursday specials are $1.00 off all wines, $3.00 Albita Purple Haze and Skirt Night (i.e. $1.00 off everything in the house for anyone legitimately wearing a skirt). Since they don't serve much food, BSGS is providing some free pizza!

This month's BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether will be this Thursday (March 6) at 6:30pm at The Concert Pub & Grill (5636 Richmond Avenue, just west of Chimney Rock). It has a relaxing patio and offers pool, shuffleboard, and darts if you are up for some activity. The happy hour specials are until 9pm.

What makes this month's Happy Hour GetTogether so special? With the coupon we send by email you get one free drink and free chips and salsa. Make sure to print it out and take it with you. They will not honor the complimentary beverage without it! See you there!

The first 2007-2008 BSGS Bimonthly Meeting will be tomorrow (Tuesday, October 16) at 5:30pm in HSC 102.
Please join us for open discussion on present and future graduate student issues and activities, and to meet and chat with the other graduate students of your department.
We will provide free pizza and drinks. If time permits we will incorporate some gaming at the end of the meeting (Wii).

Although the weather is nice outside, the lawn where we play Volleyball in front of SR2 is still soaked. So today we are going to play in the Recreation and Wellness Center again. We will meet in the lobby around 5:30. See you there!

Another month, another first Thursday, another BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether!

We will be there from 6pm to whenever we feel like! Happy Hour is until 7pm, but we'll be there longer. We hope to see as many of you as possible!

We have three new BSGS Officers: Heather Brasher is the new BSGS Secretary, and Shadi Kilani and Emiliano Fumagalli join us to help with public relations and coordinating our sports activities.

We really appreciate the amount of response we got and are quite happy to see that people are interested in some of the things we are planning to do.

Since a fair amount of you showed interest in playing some Volleyball (at least once in a while), let's get together again every Friday late afternoon on the lawn in front of the SR2 building, beside the SR1 building. We will start this Friday after the Departmental Barbecue, so bring some sport clothes and let's gather between 6pm and 6:30pm. There will be some water and sodas and everybody is welcome!

We will start working on implementing the other ideas and will keep you posted...

In addition, Mrs. Paul offered to discuss some important information regarding the changes in payment of our fee bills. We want to make sure that we all understand these changes to avoid making any mistakes in paying our bills which would cost us (even) more money. Please make sure to be there on time (11:30 am) for this brief but important discussion!

The How Do I? page has been updated to reflect the new process of enrollment and fee payment with myUH (PeopleSoft). Go there if you need to know or remind yourself how it works from now on. Please let us know if anything is missing or could be improved.
In addition some of the links on the UH and Science Useful Links pages have been updated. Check out the new HAM-TMC Library link and how to get access to the Texas Medical Center Library.

This month's BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether will be this Thursday (May 3) at 6:30pm at Byzantio Cafe & Bar in Midtown/Montrose (403 West Gray). They have a wide variety of drinks, from coffee, tea and juices to wine, beer and spirits, and serve Mediterranean food, pizza and salads. Happy Hour is until 10pm ($1.75 Wells and $2.00 Domestic Longnecks). See you there!

This Thursday (April 5) we will meet at 6pm at El Pueblito in Montrose (1423 Richmond Ave). There is only a 10% chance of precipitation, so we'll probably sit on their very nice patio. Happy Hour ends at 7pm ($2.95 margaritas), so don't come too late!

The weather is becoming nicer and the days are longer, so it seems to be a good time to start gathering again to play some Volleyball. We will play every Friday (if it is not raining) at about 5pm in front of the SR2 building, beside the SR1 building. Everybody is invited, no matter what skill level. It is just to have a good time and release the stress of the week.

Please join us this Thursday (March 1) after 6pm at Onion Creek Coffee House in the Heights. Happy Hour is until 7pm and they also serve food. If the weather is nice we will be outside on the patio!

Please join us today after 6pm at Baker Street Pub for Happy Hour (until 9pm) and stay as long as you like chatting, playing pool or enjoying the live music.

BSGS wishes all of you a Happy New Year! We would like to thank everybody who showed up for the BSGS Christmas Party, it was fun. You can find some pictures from the party on the new Pictures page where we will put up pictures of BSGS events from now on.

We are planning to start a monthly BSGS Happy Hour GetTogether, we will let you know more soon!

BSGS invites you to attend the graduate student Christmas party. This will be an opportunity to get together and celebrate the end of the semester. It will take place at Rudyard's Pub in Montrose (if you don't know the place, you are spending too much time in your lab) on Friday December 15th at 7:00pm.

AND we will offer you the first drink!!!!. Guests are very welcome (although we can't afford to offer them a drink).

For those of you who don't have a ride, we will organize a car pool from the University.

We changed the code to enter the BSGS Lounge, please check your email or ask us at bsgs@uh.edu.
We also refilled the lounge with food and drinks.

We (finally) loaded the lounge with food and drinks. Sodas, water, sweets, chips, pop-corn and noodles are available for 50 cents per item.
We realized that some people were actually considering this convenience as a free food provider. We know that graduate students don't have a lot of money. But neither does BSGS, and if you don't pay we will soon not be able to provide food and drinks anymore. So please, make sure you pay for what you take. For those of you who had a tab before October 1st, we reported your dues on the board in the lounge.
For the newly arrived students, the lounge is located in SR2, room 214. There is a code to enter, that you can obtain from other graduate students (or by emailing us at bsgs@uh.edu). If you have any suggestion about items that you would like to see in the lounge, please let us know, we will be happy to consider it for the next groceries.

The invitation is nationwide however it is pretty obvious it will be difficult for us to attract someone which is very famous and far away. Therefore we would recommend a local speaker, i.e. from within Texas.

New Look! We have redesigned our website and updated most of the old content.
Over the next couple of month we will also add some new stuff to support your life as a graduate student. So stay tuned...

BSGS is working hard on resolving the parking issue. There are some unanswered questions like why some people are denied the parking permit and some others not. We need your help to answer this question. Your answer is confidential and will not have any impact on your faculty/staff permit if you already have one. But it is really significant in order to be able to give a complete picture to people of higher authorities outside our Department. We appreciate your fast response.
