Discipline and Dismissal Guidance

Probationary Period for Regular Staff Employees -- SAM 02.A.18

DEFINITIONS

Exempt Staff
- Formerly known as monthly employees
- Exempt from overtime.
- Upon employment, these employees are on probation for 12 months

Non-exempt Staff
- Formerly known as hourly employees
- Employees NOT exempt from overtime.
- Upon employment, these employees are on probation for 6 months

POLICY PROVISIONS

Leave of absence while on probation
1. Probation begins first day of employment
2. New employees on probation may not transfer to another area of supervision while on probation
3. Employees ‘allowed’ or ‘required’ to take leave of absence during probationary period will have their probationary period extended upon their return by the amount of time taken

Dismissal while on probation
As soon as possible after determination has been made that the employee is unsuitable for continued employment
- Without cause
- In writing
- Must consult with human resources
