Homecoming Safety Tips Offered by UH Fire Marshal

Houston, Oct. 24, 2014 — Homecoming is right around the corner at the University of Houston, which means parties and celebrations are being planned and organized. The UH Fire Marshal's office would like to remind the UH community to be cautious with electrical fire safety.

Some important guidelines to remember are:

Candles are not allowed.

Portable space heaters are not allowed.

Extension cords are not allowed.

Lamps should be placed on level surfaces, away from things that can burn

Bulbs that match the lamp's recommended wattage should be used (Halogen bulbs are not allowed.)

Contact your RA or building coordinator immediately if you see any discolored wall outlets, sparks from an outlet; or if you smell any burning rubbery smell that can be a sign of a problem with the electrical system in your building.

Additional contact numbers include the Fire Marshal's office 713-743-5858; DPS Dispatch at 713-743-3333; or for emergencies call 911 immediately.
