Starbucks Has Coffee Masters at Student Center and SC Satellite

FFC adds

Houston, Sept. 22, 2015 — UH Starbucks locations in the Student Center and Student Center Satellite now have three coffee masters who can assist customers with a vast knowledge of coffee and creating the perfect cup of java.

"A Starbucks coffee master is an individual who knows more about coffee and can assist a customer with roasting selections," said Armani Authorlee, a biotechnology major and a coffee master at the Student Center Starbucks.

Starbucks offers a coffee master program that allows baristas to study Starbucks' unique core coffees and develop their brewing skills.

"The program is a 12-week course and allows you to learn at your own pace," said Lindsey Hagen, a senior education major and coffee master at the Student Center Starbucks. "I took my time with the material and completed the course in six months."

In order to complete their coffee master training, each barista must pass a blind coffee tasting, a written test and a coffee tasting demonstration.

"I received a coffee master apron and a certificate from our regional manager," said Griselda Arias, a coffee master at the Student Center Satellite location. "I presented my French press final coffee tasting to our district manager and paired my coffees with a quinoa and orange salad."

All three coffee masters have a favorite blend they enjoy brewing for customers and feel that is what makes the Starbucks experience unique.

"I love it when people have a specific roast of coffee that they want," said Hagen. "It shows me that they care about the coffee they are drinking."

One thing all these coffee masters have in common is they really enjoy their co-workers.

"I enjoy working with the team," said Authorlee. "They are all interesting people and you meet all walks of life in this business."
