TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING ADVISORY COMMITTEE PASSES PARKING PLAN
Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee (TPAC) recently released its
recommended parking permit plan for
2012-2013. At a Town Hall meeting in
December, the committee presented
their future development and
construction plans along with the
permit prices for the upcoming
years.
After many months of special
sessions, discussion and revisions,
the committee has developed a solid
plan to get ahead of the supply and
demand curve and improve physical
parking facilities for long term
serviceability. With a record
enrollment for Fall 2010 and
anticipated continued growth in
demand for parking on campus,
parking is expected to continue to
be a challenge.
With this recommended parking plan,
UH is projected to see an actual
surplus in parking spaces by Fall
2013.
Parking and Transportation has
several construction projects
outlined through 2015, including the
addition of a stadium parking garage
in Fall 2012 which will provide
1,500 spots. Starting this spring,
P&T will begin construction on Leek
Street lots (adding 240 spaces), Lot
16D expansion (130 spaces), 19D
expansion (132 spaces) and Bayou
Oaks lot addition (80 spaces). In
the summer of 2012, the MacGregor
lots will be developed adding 500
more spaces. By 2015, P&T hopes to
have three more parking garages
built.
Parking and Transportation is an
auxiliary service, meaning it is
self supporting and can enter into
debt service. Therefore, P&T is
required to fund its own projects
using revenue earned from citations,
visitor parking and mainly through
the sale of permits to students,
faculty and staff. In order to
support the plan to meet the growing
parking demands of the university,
TPAC developed a financial strategy
to accommodate the construction
projects to allow for more parking
by raising permit prices over a two
year period. In 2012 and 2013, the
main increases can be found in
reserved and garage parking for
faculty and staff and residential
housing parking for students.
