Cougar Village II
Construction began in April 2012 on Cougar Village II, a student
residence facility consisting of approximately 274 two-bedroom
shared bath units, two apartments for resident staff,
approximately 36 individual apartments for resident assistants,
and related amenities.
The project is the second phase of Cougar Village Freshman
Housing, consisting of two similar residence facilities to be
located along Wheeler Street at the southern edge of the UH
campus. Each student bedroom shall accommodate two beds for a
total capacity of 1,144 beds. Amenities shall include a
reception area/lobby with security desk, central and floor
lounges, computer room, laundry rooms, two multi-purpose
classrooms, fitness area, an outside-accessed living-learning
center with two staff offices, floor kitchenettes, and vending
areas with electrical power and data service. Support spaces
shall include housekeeping and custodial closets, mail center,
storage/maintenance rooms, IT and building systems closets,
trash room and chute, and elevators and equipment rooms.
Two unfurnished staff apartments approximately 1,200 sf in size
shall also be included. Student rooms will be furnished with a
single bed (twin x), desk, desk chair, and bookcase. Handicapped
accessible bedroom units will be provided including 7
two-bedroom standard ADA units, 3 two-bedroom ADA units with
“roll in showers”, 6 two-bedroom standard hearing impaired
units, 1 one-bedroom RA unit with “roll in shower”, 1
one-bedroom hearing impaired RA unit, and 1 one–bedroom ADA
hearing impaired RA unit.
Typical resident floors shall be designed to accommodate groups
of 32 students per 1 student resident assistant. These groups of
approximately 32 students will share a common living room/lounge
area with the bedrooms located nearby. Adjacent exterior
courtyards will support outdoor activities and feature
landscaping, seating, bike parking, artwork, and site lighting.
Site paving will create and reinforce strong pedestrian/bicycle
connections with campus. All site improvements shall complement
and enhance the Cougar Village Phase 1 project, including a
securable courtyard that creates a large gathering place for
campus-wide events and informal recreation.
The building will be approximately 288,000 GSF and seven
stories. The estimated project cost is $50,000,000 and the
completed facility is expected to be available for occupancy
Fall 2013.
