STUDENT CALLS ERP HIS PARKING LOT OF CHOICE

Each day, Joel Hill kicks back and relaxes as he pulls up to campus. No more missed classes, no more circling lots for an open parking spot - this commuter pulls right up, parking in the same spot almost every day and never has to worry about finding a space because there are plenty available. The supply chain management junior has chosen to utilize the parking lot at the Energy Research Park (ERP) and ride the Eastwood/ERP Cougar Line shuttle to campus for a stress-free parking experience.

“I drive right up, wait a few minutes max, get on the bus and I’m done,” Hill said. “I get on the bus, sit back, and I can relax.”

Hill started parking at ERP at the beginning of the Spring semester. During the first few weeks of the semester, he said he spent too much time searching for a parking spot on campus and missed classes.

“I just said, this isn’t going to work,” he said.

Hill looked back at an e-mail sent to students at the start of the semester and discovered information about parking plans. One of the suggestions is to park in the ERP lot and ride the shuttle. The lot offers economy parking as well as covered spots for ungated student and faculty/staff. Hill parks right by the bus stop and waits for the shuttle. Since using ERP, he has not missed a class due to parking issues.

“There’s plenty of parking over there, and it really blows my mind that more people don’t take advantage of it,” he said.

He calls the ride over his “me time” to study or just relax as someone else does the driving. The shuttle drops him off at the University Center, nearby his classes at Bauer College of Business. He said he has cut out the headache, and no longer arrives to his classes stressed out. Even though the ERP parking oasis may take a few more minutes to get to campus, he said if you plan accordingly, the benefits are through the roof and urges others to use the lot.

Students can be proactive in planning their trip to campus by checking the Cougar Line schedules available online. Also, Parking and Transportation Services uses the NextBus system which gives real-time arrival predictions for the shuttles. Students can visit the P&T website at www.uh.edu/parking, click on the NextBus logo and choose their route to see how many minutes they will need to wait until the next bus arrives. By utilizing these services and the ERP lot, students can find a solution to their parking challenge.

“Even if people don’t use ERP every day, they should consider it as a backup,” Hill said. “I use it every single day. I love it.”
