Past Sustainability Fest

With the launch of Green UH, several outreach programs and sustainability-focused events were organized on campus. Green UH Day was launched in 2008 featuring a campus cleanup, recycling information sessions and a vegan picnic. Green UH later transitioned to the Office of Sustainability, and the first-ever Sustainability Fest was held in 2012.

Breaking away from the conventional setup of past Sustainability Fests and Green UH days, the 2014 Sustainability Fest featured zones to better showcase the multifaceted areas within the field of sustainability and to help educate the campus community about the ways that they can live more sustainably. Zones included health and wellness, arts and community, sustainable transportation, eco-nomy and green systems and the natural environment. The event was part of the Student Center's Stress Free Finals Week.

For more information, view the event map, flyer andnews release.

The first 500 guests received a UH sustainability tote bag that included general sustainability information, a reusable water bottle, and a bookmark that lists sustainable living tips and is printed on FSC certified paper with 100% post-consumer recycled content. The bottles were BPA free and made in the U.S.; attendees were encouraged to fill their bottles at the event's water monster.

The 2014 event also had stage presence by featuring sustainability poetry readings, a healthy food cooking demo, a yoga demonstration and weather balloon launch. Nissan Leaf was present and offered test drives.

Sustainability Fest 2014 was the Office of Sustainability's first attempt at a zero waste event. Most everything was recycled or composted and other items were reused for craft projects during RecycleMania. UH Catering provided vegan meals to all of the exhibitors and volunteers, and healthy snacks were available to guests.
