Creative Expressions Contest Seeks Entries

Students, faculty and staff can win prizes by creating a written work or visual art piece for a contest being organized as part of the upcoming Sustainability Fest.

The submission deadline for the creative expressions contest is Friday, Nov. 6, at 5 p.m.

Written pieces can include – but are not limited to – poetry, short stories, articles, letters and songs. Visual works can include photography, painting, drawing, sculptures and digital art.

“Sustainability combines social, environmental and economic aspects that challenge us to thoughtfully, justly and responsibly address the longevity and success of all living things on this planet,” said Sarah Kelly, program manager for the University of Houston Office of Sustainability. “This contest provides a wonderful outlet for the UH community to use their creative talents to address any aspect of sustainability.”

First-place winners in each of the two categories will receive a $100 gift card. The prize for second place is a $50 gift card, while third-place winners will be awarded a $25 gift card.

Only one entry per person will be accepted. The piece must be an original work. Entry topics must relate back to an aspect of sustainability. Possible topics can include animal treatment, climate change, conservation, consumerism, economic growth, environmental justice, environmental quality, food, health disparities, human rights, natural resources, peace, pollution, renewable energy, social equity, systems thinking, urban planning/design, transportation, waste, water, wellness and wildlife.

Entries must be submitted via email to sustainability@uh.edu with the words “Creative Expressions Entry” in the subject line. Entries also need to include the person’s first and last name, an attached copy of written entries, and photos of artwork entries. The title and what the inspiration was for creating the piece should also be included. Artwork entries can also be judged in person if dropped off at the Office of Sustainability, which is located in Suite 151 of the Welcome Center Garage.

Winners will be invited to showcase their work at Sustainability Fest, which will take place Nov. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Lynn Eusan Park. Winning entries also will be featured on the Office of Sustainability website.
