According to the IMDB website, WALL-E takes place 700 years in the future, when the planet is overrun with garbage and devoid of plant and animal life, the result of years of environmental degradation and consumerism. The surviving humans are living on a spaceship. The original plan was for them to live there five years while cleaning robots prepared Earth for recolonization. But after 700 years, only one robot remains.
