Help Beautify Our Campus, Volunteer for Cleanup Day

Cleanup Day

In preparation for the fall semester, the Office of Sustainability is working closely with Facilities Management to coordinate this year’s Cleanup Day.

Scheduled for Thursday, August 7, the event is set to kick off at 8 a.m., in front of the MD Anderson Library. Volunteers will be needed to scour various campus zones for trash and recycling, as well as expired fliers, signs and stickers. Weed pulling is also set to be part of the agenda.

To make the day more exciting, participants will be divided into volunteer teams that will compete against each other across three categories including most waste collected by weight, most recyclables collected by weight and most unusual item collected.

The official weigh-in will take place in front of the library from 11-11:30 a.m.

“Cleanup Day is a gratifying opportunity for everyone to come together and give back to the campus that we all love and share,” said Sarah Kelly, program manager for the Office of Sustainability. “By working collaboratively to beautify the University, we’re not only helping the environment but also building a sense of community and ownership.”

Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to sign up online. The deadline to register is Wednesday, July 30. To show their Cougar pride, all volunteers should wear a red t-shirt.

Collection materials, scrapers, gloves, sunscreen and even reusable water bottles will be provided for participants along with refreshments. For more information or specific questions, email sustainability@uh.edu.
