Weekly Walks Combine Exercise with Appreciation of Campus Art

Art For Your Health WalksThe University of Houston community can improve its health and learn more about campus art through the Art for Your Health Walks, a new weekly initiative set to kick off Nov. 9.

Every Wednesday through the end of the semester, people can take part in the walks, which will be held from noon to 12:30 p.m., weather permitting. Those who participate in at least six of the seven scheduled walks will be eligible for a drawing to win a Fitbit.

The route and starting point will vary from week to week. Those who are interested in participating are asked to register online so organizers know how many people to expect. Below are the registration links for each walk:

The Art for Your Health is a collaboration between the UH Public Art Collection and POWER UP Employee Wellness. Mike Guidry, curator of the Public Art Collection, will lead the walks, which will be at a quick pace with stopping points at various outdoor works of art.

“The idea is to incorporate the exercise of brisk walking in between rest periods when participants will view and learn about specific pieces of art on campus,” said Guidry.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and to bring a water bottle. They should also arrive a few minutes early, as the walks will start promptly at noon.

The UH Public Art Collection comprises more than 500 works across the UH System, including nearly 300 pieces found on the UH campus. The collection contains works by local, regional, national and international artists, across all forms of media and style. For more information about the collection, visit its Facebook page.
