Identifying Best Practices and Processes to Determine Startup Packages at Research-Intensive Institutions with Large Research Expenditures

Project Description:

Startups are a critical component of hiring offers for new faculty. Institutions vary in how startups are determined, and how startup resources are shared between faculty members. The current project goal is to determine best practices for compiling startup packets, for determining what resources are best shared among faculty, and identifying what resources individual faculty need access to for their respective labs. Ultimately, the goal is to compare the UH process of determining startups to those at top research institutions, determine differences, and provide action recommendations for enhancing the UH startup allocation processes.

The project is expected to be summarized in a report for the Provost, which will contain a summary and recommendations on the process of allocating startup resources at UH. Mark Clarke, Associate Provost of Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs will serve as the project sponsor.    

Learning Outcomes for the Fellow Include:

  • Exposure to senior administrators and inner workings of the Provost’s office
  • Understanding faculty recruitment processes and the role of startups/non-compensation resources in faculty recruitment
  • Ability to advise administrators on best practices in startup allocation and implications for UH
  • Advise on gender equity issues as they pertain to startup allocation processes
  • Prepare presentations for senior administrators summarizing study findings

Eligibility Criteria and Benefits:

  • Female faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor are encouraged to apply.
  • The selected faculty member will receive an administrative stipend of $3,000 and a teaching release through ADVANCE.
