Admission Criteria

Here are the criteria for admission to the University of Houston as a transfer student.

  • Applicants who have completed between 15 and 29 semester hours of college-level credit must have a 2.50 or higher cumulative grade point average*.
  • Applicants who have completed 30 or more semester hours of college credit must have a 2.00 or higher cumulative grade point average.*
  • Admission will be granted to applicants who have earned an associate of science or associate of art degree from the last school attended as long as the school is a U.S. regionally accredited school. Official transcripts must be received from all previously attended institutions.
  • Applicants who are not eligible to return immediately to the last institution attended will not be admitted.

* All grades earned from college-level courses, including repeated courses, are used in computing the grade point average. All colleges attended must be U.S. regionally accredited.

Special Major Requirements

The following majors have additional selection criteria over and above the general admissions requirements.

Architecture Majors

Application deadline is March 1st and is granted for the fall semester only. Applicants are encouraged to submit a non-returnable 8.5"x11" portfolio clearly marked with the student's name and social security number.

Business Majors

Applicants who have earned between 15 and 59 semester hours need to have a cumulative GPA of 2.75.

Applicants who have completed 60 or more semester hours need to have a 2.75 GPA on the last 60 hours of college-level work attempted.

Computer Science Majors

Applicants who have earned 15 or more semester hours of college credit cannot be directly admitted to the computer science department. Such applicants should enter the university as Undergraduate Scholars (formerly called the University Studies Division) or any other major of the applicant's choice. The student should get advising from the Computer Science Department concerning courses necessary to satisfy the criteria for a change of major to computer science.

Engineering Majors

Applicants who have finished 15 semester hours or more need a 2.50 GPA for all college courses taken as well as a 2.50 GPA on all college-level mathematics, chemistry, physics, English, and engineering courses. Applicants should also attempt one college-level math course and at least one physics or chemistry course.

International Student applicants need a TOEFL score of 550 on the written examination, 213 on the computerized test, or 79-80 on the internet based test.

Health & Human Performance Majors

Applicants who have completed 15-29 hours of coursework need a 2.50 GPA. Applicants who have completed 30 semester hours or more must have a 2.30 GPA or higher. This requirement applies to students majoring in Kinesiology, Health, and Human Nutrition and Foods.

Hotel & Restaurant Management Majors

Applicants who completed less than 20 semester hours of college credit need to meet the requirements for freshman admission.

Applicants who completed between 21 and 60 semester hours of college credit need a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA.

Applicants who have completed more than 60 semester hours of college credit need a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA on the last 60 semester hours.

Information Systems Technology Majors

Applicants who completed 15 semester hours or more need a GPA of 2.50 or higher to be accepted as a Information Systems Technology major.

Music Majors

Applicants need a 2.50 GPA in all music courses earned and need to audition for the Moores School of Music faculty on their primary instrument or voice prior to admission. See more information about auditions.

Pre-Pharmacy Majors

Applicants who have completed 15 semester hours or more need a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 2.75 GPA in all required pre-pharmacy course work attempted (calculus, statistics, general biology I and II with labs, general chemistry I and II with labs, microbiology with lab, ororganic chemistry I and II with labs, and physics).
