Family and Guests

Family members and guests are welcome to attend New Student Orientation. Students attending a New Student Orientation should register expected guests at the time of the conference registration. This helps us plan for the event, but it is not a formal commitment. On the first day of conference check-in, all guests' attendance will be confirmed and the guest fee will be placed on the student's account accordingly. Family members and guests are welcome at all conferences and, if attending, will follow a separate schedule of events. Family members and guests will only attend the second day of programming; there are no programs for family members or guests on the first day.

Because of the nature of the program, it is not appropriate for anyone except parents/guardians or spouses to attend as a guest.  Friends or siblings are not allowed to accompany students. The exception would be an older sibling who is acting in a guardian capacity; however, in this case, the sibling would attend Family Member Orientation and would not be with the student during any time parents and students are not ordinarily together.

Family and Guest Schedule

Family members and guests will attend specific programs designed for them. Students will not be available to family members and guests until they have completed their advisement and registration process. Family members and guests only attend the second day of the New Student Orientation. If you’re visiting the Houston area, please attend the Check-In with your student on Day 1 and we’ll provide you with information about the Bayou City and prepare you for what to expect on the second day during Family Member and Guest Orientation.

Family members and guests of freshman students will receive an official schedule of events on the day of their conference. Please visit NSO Family Sample Schedule to see a sample of the Family Member and Guest Orientation schedule.

Family members and guests have the opportunity to attend specific programming to assist in their transition to being a Cougar Family. Programming includes educational sessions provided by:

  • Career Services
  • Dean of Students Office
  • Division of Student Affairs
  • Learning and Assessment Services
  • Scholarships and Financial Aid
  • Veteran Services
