UH recognized outstanding faculty and staff. Barbara Keyfitz,
John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Mathematics, is the 2006 Esther
Farfel Award recipient. George Fox, professor of
biology and biochemistry, and John Hart, professor
of history, were named John and Rebecca Moores professors.
Excellence in Research and Scholarship awards were presented to
Stuart E. Dryer, John and Rebecca Moores Professor
and chair of the Department of Biology and Biochemistry; Peter
G. Vekilov, associate professor of chemical engineering;
and Pradeep Sharma, assistant professor of mechanical
engineering.
Teaching Excellence awards were presented to Costa M. Colbert,
associate professor of biology and biochemistry; Sarah Fishman,
professor of history; Consuelo Waight, assistant
professor of human development and consumer sciences; and Jacqueline
Weaver, A.A. White Professor of Law. The Provost’s
Core Teaching Excellence Award went to Guillermo de los
Reyes, assistant professor of Spanish, and Shirley
Yu, associate professor of educational psychology. Robert
Buzzanco, associate professor of history, received the
Distance Education Teaching Excellence Award, and Craig
Larson, lecturer in the math department, received the Non-Tenure
Teaching Excellence Award. Graduate Teaching Assistant awards were
received by students Tarek Mahfouz and Keith
Richards. T. Randall Lee, professor of
chemistry, received the Faculty Award for Mentoring Undergraduate
Research.
Landis Odom, undergraduate adviser 1 in the sociology
and anthropology departments, and Lawrence R. Williams,
director of undergraduate affairs and academic advising and visiting
assistant professor of biology and biochemistry, received the George
Magner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.
UH presented Tung Manh (Tom) Ho, journey locksmith
for Residential Life and Housing, the Charles F. McElhinney Distinguished
Service Award. Staff Excellence Award recipients are Dorothy
Barrera, business administrator in the Cullen College of
Engineering; Beverly Green, custodian supervisor
for Residential Life and Housing; Javier Hidalgo,
associate director of operations for Residential Life and Housing;
Betty Manuel, financial coordinator in the Office
of Creative Services; Sandra Marino- Rodriquez,
financial assistant 1 in the Department of Learning and Assessment
Services; and Ray M. Rottman, lab supervisor 2
in the physics department.
Roland
Glowinski, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Professor of
Mathematics and professor of mechanical engineering, was elected
to the French Academy of Sciences. Since joining the UH faculty
in 1985, Glowinski has received numerous honors, including being
elected to the French National Academy of Technology and receiving
the Theodore von Kármán Prize, an international honor
only awarded every five years.

Edgardo Emmanuel Colon (’80, ’84,
’00, ’03) was selected Houston Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce president.
Mario Duarte (’03), security engineer
with the city of Houston Airport System, was named one of the
new faces of engineering by the Engineers Week Foundation.
The Houston Alumni Organization, Houston Coca-Cola
Bottling Company and H-E-B received a 2006 Leadership in Action
Award in the education category for the 15th Annual
Operation School Supplies. Leadership Houston presented the award,
which recognizes corporate and community organizations that make
extraordinary contributions toward the betterment of life in the
greater Houston area.
President George W. Bush appointed Jacob Monty
(’93) to the board of directors of the Border Environment
Cooperation Commission and the North American Development Bank.
Monty is managing partner of Monty Partners LLP.
Faculty
Olafs Daugulis, assistant professor of chemistry,
was selected by the editorial boards of “Synlett and Synthesis”
as a 2006 Journal awardee. The award honors promising young professors.
David R. Dow, University Distinguished Professor
in the UH Law Center, was elected to the American Law Institute.
Gary Dworkin, professor of sociology, was a
visiting senior fellow at Australian National University.
Rebecca Forrest, lecturer and visiting professor
of physics, received the first American Physical Society M. Hildred
Blewett Scholarship for Women in Physics.
David Francis, chair of the psychology department
and director of the Texas Institute for Measurement Evaluation
and Statistics, and
Jack Fletcher, Distinguished University Professor
of Psychology, received the International Reading Association’s
Albert J. Harris Award. The award recognizes a recently published
journal article or monograph that makes an outstanding contribution
to the understanding of prevention or assessment of reading or
learning disabilities.
Martin Golubitsky, Cullen Distinguished Professor
of Mathematics and director of the Institute for Theoretical Engineering
and Science, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences.
Susan Hardin, adjunct professor of biology and
biochemistry and president and chief executive officer of VisiGen
Biotechnologies Inc., was elected a Fellow of the American Institute
for Medical and Biological Engineering.
Sharon O’Neil, professor of information
and logistics technology, was selected to receive a University
of Illinois 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award.
Carlos Ordóñez, professor of physics,
was named 2006-2008 scholar with the Kavli Institute for Theoretical
Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Steven Pei, Cullen College of Engineering associate
dean for research and professor of electrical and computer engineering,
was named executive director of the UH Southwest Public Safety
Technology Center, which is funded by the National Institute of
Justice.
The National Academies of Practice in Psychology elected Lynn
P. Rehm, director of the Depression Research Clinic and
professor of psychology, to join the organization as distinguished
practitioner. The Greater Houston Business Ethics Roundtable named
its scholarship program in honor of Bette Stead,
professor of marketing, emerita, in recognition of the pivotal
role she played in founding the roundtable and in recognition
of her lifelong commitment to education.
James Symons, Distinguished Cullen Professor
of Civil Engineering, emeritus, received the American Water Works
Association’s Abel Wolman Award of Excellence for lifetime
achievement.
Barbara Tatum, director of counseling and advising
in the College of Pharmacy, received the National Women of Achievement
2005 Shining Star Award.

Jenna Berger is the guest curator for the exhibit
“Survivors’ Journeys” at the Holocaust Museum
Houston. Berger is the managing editor of The Houston Review of
History and Culture and the associate director of the Oral History
of Houston project in the UH Center for Public History.
Students
Mariaclara Añez, chemical engineering
student, received a second-place award in the 2005 Keck Center
for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Training Annual Research Conference
poster competition.
Clarina de la Cruz, physics student, won first
prize in the worldwide student competition of the 50th Magnetism
and Magnetic Materials Conference.
Curtis Delaney and Matt Dougherty,
broadcast journalism students, and Jenny Yau, theater student
with a journalism minor, received four Mark of Excellence Awards
from the Society of Professional Journalists, Region 8. The organization
selected Dougherty for his “Questions Linger Over the Effectiveness
of Prop. 12” story in the TV General News Reporting category
and “A Day in the Life of a Male Prostitute” story
in the TV Feature category. Delaney’s “Houston’s
Water Quality Improving” placed in the Radio In-Depth Reporting
category. Yau was chosen in the Radio News Reporting category
for “AFL-CIO Splits Over Do-or- Die Unionizing Strategy”
story. The students produced the stories as part of the School
of Communication’s World Internet News newsroom in fall
2005.
The American Advertising Federation named Mahjabeen Kamal,
communication student, one of its most promising minority students.
Wahab Mehmood, electrical engineering student,
received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’
Outstanding Student Member of the Year Award.
Phil Sinitiere, doctoral history student, received
the World History Association-Phi Alpha Theta Student Paper in
World History Prize (Graduate Division) for his essay “Navigating
the Indian Ocean: Exploring the Textures of an African Diaspora.”

UH-Downtown
presented faculty and staff excellence awards. Carolyn Ashe,
professor of administrative management, received the Award for Excellence
in Teaching. Ashe is assistant chair of the Department of Management,
Marketing and Business Administration and director of the Institute
for Business, Ethics and Public Issues. Viola Garcia,
associate professor of education, received the Award for Excellence
in Service. Garcia is the director of field studies and assistant
chair and director of undergraduate programs. Jacek Turski,
professor of mathematics, received the Award for Excellence in Scholarship/
Creativity. Rita Patel, academic adviser at Cinco
Ranch, received the Distinguished Staff Award. Merit awards were
given to Melissa Price, administrative secretary
in the business college, and Frank Muñiz,
UHD Police Department corporal.
The
professional writing program received a $30,000 grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities. The grant funds the study of four
local disasters, including last year’s explosion at the Texas
City British Petroleum plant and the destruction of the Columbia
and the Challenger space shuttles. Ann Jennings
is the grant project director and program director.
Alumni
Adolfo Santos’ book “Do Members
of Congress Reward Their Future Employers?” was published.
Santos (’90) is an associate professor of social sciences.
Faculty/Staff
Byron Christmas, associate professor of natural
sciences, received the Sixth Annual RadTech President’s
Award in recognition of significant contributions to RadTech and
the advancement of ultraviolet and electron beam technology.
Students
UH-Downtown was the only public university to win high honors
in the Region 12 College Bowl Tournament. The students who took
fourth place were Jillian Adams, Armando
Gallegos, Taylor Landis, James
Kern and Tek Williams. Professors Nell
Sullivan and Nick Rangel coached the
team.
The Texas Branch of the American Society of Microbiology honored
two natural sciences students at its college science competition.
Jannie Dilber won first place in the undergraduate
division for her poster presentation on “Analysis of Bacterial
Biofilms.” Leslie Cook received an honorable
mention for her work on “Basidiomycetes Fungal Populations
at Sheldon Lake State Park.

UHCL honored outstanding faculty and staff. UHCL presented Robert
McGlashan, professor of management, with the President’s
Distinguished Service Award; Altan Erdem, professor
of marketing, the President’s Distinguished Research Award;
Rebecca Huss-Keeler, associate professor of early
childhood education, the President’s Distinguished Teaching
Award; and Anne Henry, graphic artist, the President’s
Distinguished Staff Service Award—the Hugh P. Avery Prize.
Staff Merit awards went to Mark Putnam, supervisor
of system operations; Agatha Whitney, secretary;
and Bonnie Garza, assistant director of technical
services.
UHCL received a Texas Collegiate Partnership Crystal
Award from the Texas Association of Partners in Education for Super
Sci-Tech, the highest honor given for community support by the organization.
In collaboration with Hanoi University of Technology, UHCL signed
an agreement with the Electric Company of Vietnam, the largest employer
in that country. The company will provide up to 30 full scholarships
a year to employees and/or their dependents to complete degrees
at UHCL. UHCL welcomed the first 11 of these scholars this spring.
A delegation from Qiqihar University, Qiqihar, China, visited UHCL
to discuss a variety of potential collaborations involving faculty
development, faculty and student exchanges, visiting scholars and
curriculum consulting.
Katherine Justice, executive director of human
resources and affirmative action, was selected as the Texas Higher
Education Human Resources Association president-elect. In 2007,
she will become the third person from the UH System to serve as
the organization’s president since it was established in 1975.

UHCL presented its 2006 President’s Cabinet Leadership
Award to Sallie Helms (’94) and its 2006
President’s Cabinet Philanthropy awards to Sue Garman
(’89) and James Benson, associate professor
of legal studies, for their commitment to the university.
Lori Melendez (’00) received the Council
of Alumni Association Executives 2006 Jerry F. Tardy New Professional
Award in honor of her talents and leadership skills in student
relations, special events and constituent relations at the Houston
Alumni Organization at UH. The award will fund her visits to Iowa
State University and University of California, Los Angeles and
her participation in the organization’s summer institute.
Bhikku Gasnagoda Rahula (’93) published
the book “Beautiful Living: Buddha’s Way to Prosperity,
Wisdom and Inner Peace.”
Faculty/Staff
Sue Brown, associate professor of curriculum
and instruction, presented “Preparing Elementary Teachers
to Teach Geometry: A 12-Month Program” at the annual joint
meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical
Association of America. Tom Fox, assistant professor of mathematics,
presented “Fully Integrating the Use of a Dynamic Geometry
Software to Teach College Geometry for Preservice Secondary Mathematics
Teachers – Emphasis on Discovery, Conjecture and Proof.”
William T. Cummings, business school dean, was
elected president of the Southern Business Administration Association,
the regional association of collegiate business programs offered
by colleges and universities in the southern United States.
Four UHCL Greater Houston Area Writing Project instructors earned
awards from the National Council of Teachers of English and its
affiliate, the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts.
The national council presented Sheila Newell,
project codirector and instructor, with the Edwin A. Hoey Award
for Outstanding Educator in English Language Arts. The state council
honored Lisa Frase, instructor, as Outstanding
Educator in English Language Arts for elementary school; Kristi
Piper, co-director and instructor, Outstanding Educator
in English Language Arts for high school; and Mary Selvas,
instructor, Outstanding Educator in English Language Arts for
middle school.
Hien Van Tran, professor of business, was the
keynote speaker at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. His
speech was titled “Vietnam and the World Trade Organization.”
Chunlong Zhang, assistant professor of environmental
science/ environmental chemistry, was elected to serve a three-year
term on the “Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry”
journal’s editorial board.
Students
School of Education student Zeynep Koseoglu
garnered the first UHCL Outstanding Graduate Student in the Special
Education Program Award in recognition of her commitment to help
children with disabilities.
Undergraduate student Janna McCarley and graduate
student Peggy Griebenow received the Dr. Patricia
Potter Wilson School of Education Outstanding Undergraduate and
Graduate Student scholarships.

recognized faculty and staff for their contributions. Timothy
Berkey, assistant professor of education and human development,
received the Enron Teaching Excellence Award. Ziad Swaidan,
assistant professor of business administration, was presented with
the Research and Scholarly Activity Excellence Award. Sandy
Venneman, associate professor of psychology and biology,
is the Faculty Service Award recipient. Kathy Rumbo,
online support technician in the School of Education and Human Development,
was recognized as Staff Employee of the Year.
UHV President Tim Hudson was named to Jackson
State University’s executive Ph.D. program’s advisory
board.
The Victoria Advertising Federation presented the UHV Office
of Communications and Marketing with a special judges Addy
award for “Insight: 2004-2005 Annual Report” and a silver
Addy for a fall registration newspaper ad. The Department
of Information Technology received a silver Addy for the
UHV homepage and a bronze Addy for the UHV online catalog.
The UHV Letting Education Achieve Dreams (LEAD)
initiative received a grant for more than $94,000 from the Texas
Guaranteed Loan Association to begin a LEAD program at Wharton County
Junior College. LEAD was accepted as one of 20 participants in the
Capacity Building Program sponsored by the OneStar Foundation Governor’s
Mentoring Initiative.
The
University of Texas Press published Margaret Dorsey’s
book “Pachangas: Borderlands Music, U.S. Politics, and Transnational
Marketing.” An assistant professor of communication, Dorsey
also is working on a second book examining marketing techniques
used by political strategists.
