‘DR. CALIGARI’ RECEIVES NOT-SO-SILENT
TREATMENT
FROM TWO STAR SYMPHONY AT UH
Cutting-Edge String Ensemble Provides Live Score for Classic Horror
Film
Art fans and horror buffs always have praised the silent classic
“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” for its eerie Expressionist
imagery. Thanks to Two Star Symphony, “Houston’s most
unusual string ensemble,” audiences have something new to
appreciate about the film.
The ensemble created an original, live score for “Dr. Caligari”
(often cited as the first horror film) that has become popular among
movie and music aficionados. At 8 p.m., Sept. 20, Two Star Symphony
will perform these arrangements during the film’s screening
in UH’s Jose Quintero Theatre in the Cynthia Woods Mitchell
Center for the Arts building.
Tickets are $15 and $10 for students. They can be purchased at
the School of Theatre & Dance box office. For additional information,
call 713-743-2929.
Released in 1919, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” tells
the story of a wicked sideshow maestro and a murderous sleepwalking
zombie who terrorize a small German town.
Two Star Symphony consists of violinist Margaret Lejeune, viola
player Jo Bird and violinist/percussionist Debra Brown. Mixing genres
such as classical, hip hop, electronic, heavy metal and gypsy, Two
Star Symphony has earned a devout following.
A previous performance of Two Star’s “Dr. Caligari”
score was played to a sold-out crowd at the Museum of Fine Arts
Houston (MFAH). The ensemble also scored “24 Short Films from
Unseen Cinema: Experimental Treasures” that was performed
at MFAH.
In February 2008, Two Star Symphony will return to UH to perform
a live score for the UH School of Theatre & Dance’s production
of “The Good Woman of Setzuan.”
