MAYOR BILL WHITE TO VISIT UH

Houston Mayor Bill White will speak at a campus forum from 2 – 3 p.m., Thursday, March 29 at the University Center’s Pacific Room. The event is free, but seating is limited.

White will discuss issues that affect students, faculty and staff living in Houston, followed by a question-and-answer session.

“This is a chance for the mayor to meet with students and really have an open dialogue about what's going on in Houston,” said Mustafa Tameez, a spokesman for the mayor. “He'll spend time talking about various issues, including the environment. But what's most important is that students get involved and ask questions about issues affecting them.”

The Daily Cougar, the University of Houston’s student newspaper, and the Student Video Network (SVN) are teaming up to bring White to UH. The mayor’s office approached The Daily Cougar hoping to find a way to connect with the UH community, said Robyn Morro, editor-in-chief.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to encourage Houstonians to be more involved with our local government,” she said.

Working with The Daily Cougar, SVN will be filming the event to air on the campus’ television station, Channel 6. Students living in the residence halls who cannot attend the event will be able to view the broadcast several times during the week following White’s presentation.

“SVN is honored and proud to be working side-by-side with The Daily Cougar on this momentous event to bring such an outspoken advocate for the city of Houston to speak at our college,” said SVN president Gus Forward.
