The University of Houston’s Anxiety Disorder Clinic is seeking
individuals to participate in a study of non-drug treatments for
anxiety disorders.
To determine whether individuals are appropriate for this study,
free comprehensive evaluations are being conducted at the clinic
located in UH’s Psychological Research and Services Center
(PRSC) at 4505 Cullen Blvd. – UH Entrance 8. Those eligible
for the study will receive group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at
a discounted rate of $20 per person and $10 per student. Sessions
will be conducted over a 12-week period.
Evaluations can be scheduled by calling PRSC at 713-743-8609, and
more information can be found at www.uh.edu/anxiety.
The National Institute for Mental Health reports one out of every
four adults in the U.S. suffers from an anxiety disorder at some
point in their lives. Anxiety disorders involve excessive apprehension
and fear of something, which usually interfere with the person’s
life. Symptoms include spontaneous panic attacks, obsessively checking
and rechecking their actions and persistent, uncontrollable worry
and social anxiety. Many people suffer these symptoms because they
are unaware of effective treatments.
“This treatment study will not only help specialists better
understand which treatments are the most effective in treating anxiety
disorders, but it will also allow us to provide the Houston community
with the most powerful treatments at a very affordable cost,”
said Peter Norton, director of UH’s Anxiety Disorder Clinic
and assistant professor of psychology.
