GALA CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF UH
ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM
Ten years. Fifty visiting scholars. A thousand Asian dignitaries.
Scores of graduates in professional positions. The University of
Houston’s Asian American Studies Center (AASC) is celebrating
a decade of accomplishments with a 10th Anniversary Gala Tuesday,
Sept. 26 at the Hilton University of Houston Hotel.

Proceeds will help fund further development of Asian American Studies
courses, research projects, study-abroad and scholar exchange programs
and community activities.
Honorees at the Gala will include the founders of the AASC Endowment,
Texas State Representative Martha Wong and Harry Gee, a noted immigration
attorney and Houston Texans Trustee. In addition, a special recognition
award will be presented to Houston Rockets center, Yao Ming. Franklin
Odo, Program Director of the Asian/Pacific American Program of the
Smithsonian Institution will deliver the keynote address.
“Our goal is to go beyond educating about cultural contributions,
language and heritage of Asians and Asian Americans,” Yali
Zou, director of the AASC said. “We want to increase our students’
ability to deal with global issues.”
Zou and the Center have created a Visiting Scholars program and
other seminars and workshops, which have hosted more than a thousand
Asian mayors, professors and business and community leaders from
Korea, India, Japan and China. AASC has also organized scores of
trips to China for students, university and city officials, and
conducted research projects on Asian Americans in the United States.
