GALA CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF UH ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM

Ten years. Fifty visiting scholars. A thousand Asian dignitaries. Scores of graduates in professional positions. The University of Houston’s Asian American Studies Center (AASC) is celebrating a decade of accomplishments with a 10th Anniversary Gala Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Hilton University of Houston Hotel.

For more information on the event, please contact Yali Zou, director of the center, at 713.743.4982 or yzou@uh.edu. Proceeds will help fund further development of Asian American Studies courses, research projects, study-abroad and scholar exchange programs and community activities.

Honorees at the Gala will include the founders of the AASC Endowment, Texas State Representative Martha Wong and Harry Gee, a noted immigration attorney and Houston Texans Trustee. In addition, a special recognition award will be presented to Houston Rockets center, Yao Ming. Franklin Odo, Program Director of the Asian/Pacific American Program of the Smithsonian Institution will deliver the keynote address.

“Our goal is to go beyond educating about cultural contributions, language and heritage of Asians and Asian Americans,” Yali Zou, director of the AASC said. “We want to increase our students’ ability to deal with global issues.”

Zou and the Center have created a Visiting Scholars program and other seminars and workshops, which have hosted more than a thousand Asian mayors, professors and business and community leaders from Korea, India, Japan and China. AASC has also organized scores of trips to China for students, university and city officials, and conducted research projects on Asian Americans in the United States.
