PROFESSOR RAYMOND T. NIMMER NAMED INTERIM
DEAN AT UH LAW CENTER
Administrative Experience, Renowned Scholarship Make
Him Excellent Choice to Lead, Provost Says
HOUSTON, May 19, 2006 – Professor Raymond T. Nimmer, the
Leonard Childs Professor of Law at the University of Houston Law
Center, has been named as the center’s interim dean, effective
June 1.
The appointment was announced by Donald J. Foss, senior vice president
for academic affairs and provost.
Nimmer is a respected national and international authority on computer
information licensing, e-commerce, and other information law issues,
and is the author of more than 20 books.
“After wide consultation with faculty, staff, students and
alumni, it became apparent that Ray Nimmer has broad support to
lead the Law Center at this time,” Foss said. “In addition
to his strong reputation as a scholar, he has administrative experience
and the trust and respect of colleagues.”
Nimmer led the Law Center as interim dean once before, from 1993
to 1995, a period during which he continued to build on the work
of prior deans to establish its national reputation for excellence
in areas such as health law, intellectual property and advocacy.
“The Law Center is poised on the cusp of a great opportunity,”
Nimmer said. “We are gifted with an excellent faculty and
student body, as well as programs of national and international
prominence. I feel privileged and excited to help lead the Law Center
on its continued path toward even further excellence.”
Earlier this year, Nimmer was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished
Chair in International Commercial Law at Catholic University, Lisbon,
Portugal, one of the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright
Scholar Program. He was the first faculty member in the history
of the Law Center to receive an award in the Fulbright Distinguished
Chairs program—of the 36 distinguished chair awards available,
only four were available to legal scholars. He has also served as
a co-director of the Law Center’s internationally renowned
Intellectual Property and Information Law Program. That program
and the Law Center’s Health Law Program have consistently
ranked in the top five or 10 programs in the country.
A search committee for the permanent dean will be announced at a
future date.
