AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND UH SYSTEM
SIGN JOINT ADMISSIONS PACT
Earning Associate of Arts or Science Degree Can Guarantee
Acceptance at Four UHS Universities
HOUSTON, May 16, 2006 – It’s just become much easier
to make the transition from Houston-area community colleges to one
of the University of Houston System’s four institutions.
The UH System (UHS) and Houston-area community colleges are implementing
a joint program that will facilitate the admission of students who
complete an academic associate’s degree directly into UHS
schools.
The program, which starts in the fall semester of 2006, guarantees
admission to UH System universities to all Houston-area community
college students who sign this joint admissions contract during
their first year in community college then complete the academic
associate’s degree in good standing.
“By establishing this joint admissions program, the Houston
area community colleges and the UH System are providing students
in our region a clear and reliable academic pathway,” said
Donald J. Foss, UHS’ senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.
“This should provide a tremendous inducement for community
college students to complete their academic associate’s degrees
and continue their upper level education. Since this will allow
the participating community colleges and the UHS institutions to
collaborate closely on coordinating course credits, academic advising
and administrative issues, it should help reduce the costs involved.
This is an important part of our shared commitment to increase participation
in higher education in our region and to improve student persistence
and academic success. ”
The UH System consists of the University of Houston, the University
of Houston-Downtown, the University of Houston-Clear Lake and the
University of Houston-Victoria. The Houston area community colleges
involved in this agreement include Alvin Community College, Brazosport
College, College of the Mainland, Galveston College, Houston Community
Colleges, Lee College, North Harris Montgomery Community College
District, San Jacinto College District, Victoria College and Wharton
County Junior College.
The joint admissions agreement will be formalized by UH System
and Houston-area community college officials during a signing ceremony
at the University of Houston Tuesday, May 16. The agreement calls
for the UH System to streamline the admissions process for participating
students. In addition, the UH System will expand advising services
at Houston-area community colleges to assist students in developing
upper level degree plans. UH System will also create incentives
for students to participate, such as access to selected UHS learning
resources and admission to special events.
The agreement provides only general admission to the UHS universities.
Requirements for admission to individual colleges or academic programs
may vary from school to school.
