HOUSTON SUITCASE THEATER AT UH PACKS, LAUGHS, LOVE IN ‘A LITTLE DIVERSION’

A marriage is on the rocks when a husband buys an expensive new tractor while his wife is fixated on recreating the magic of their early nuptials. These different agendas set the stage for a dramatic comedy exploring a Louisiana family’s arrival at an emotional crossroads.

Produced by The Houston Suitcase Theater (THST), “A Little Diversion” will be performed at UH’s Cullen Performance Hall at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 – Thursday, Oct. 27. Admission is open to the public and free with the donation of a canned food item, which will be later donated to charity.

“This comedy reinforces the importance of keeping the family together,” said Elizabeth Brown-Guillory, the play’s author and UH English professor. “The audience gets to eavesdrop on three generations of family members working through conflicts that threaten to drive a wedge through their happy home.”

Founded by Brown-Guillory in 1992, THST utilizes the talents of the UH faculty, staff and students and is committed to enhancing artistic diversity at the university.

“I wrote this play as an experiment,” she said. “Much of my work in the past ten years has been serious drama with only touches of humor.”

A previous THST production, Brown-Guillory’s drama “The Break of Day,” enjoyed a successful run in Chicago this summer and was nominated for seven Black Theater Alliance Awards.

“A Little Diversion” will also be performed as the keynote presentation during the South Central Modern Language Association Convention at 6 p.m., Oct. 27 in Houston’s Hyatt Regency Hotel.

In addition to THST, the UH English Department, Honors College, and Women’s Studies Program provided support for “A Little Diversion”.
