PICTURE THIS: PHOTOGRAPHERS HEAD TO UH FOR TECHNICAL CONFERENCE

New approaches to producing images for college marketing and university relations departments will be explored during an upcoming conference at the University of Houston.

The University Photographers’ Association of America (UPAA) will host its 43rd Annual Technical Symposium June 14-18. Many of the events will be held at UH. For a full schedule, go to http://www.upaah.org/sch.html.

“The event will bring together photographers, videographers, art directors and designers from across the country to examine technical, legal and aesthetic issues of the profession,” said Mark Lacy, UH photographer and co-chair of the organizing committee.

Presenters include Suzanne Salvo, who has worked with companies in 50 states and 50 countries including Iraq and Nigeria; Peggy Kelsey, who portrayed the stories of 40 Afghan women in The Afghan Women’s Project; and Roger Wood and James Fraher, who documented the local blues community in “Down in Houston: Bayou City Blues.”

Sessions will explore photography and its related areas of visual communications, including digital video, electronic publications and multimedia production. There will be demonstrations and hands-on workshops in studio and location lighting. An off-site workshop and photo shoot will be held in Galveston June 15. Awards will be given for print and publication competitions, as well as the most outstanding photographs from the Galveston workshop, during a banquet at the close of the symposium June 18.

The UPAA is an international organization of college and university photographers concerned with the application and practice of photography as it relates to the higher education setting. It is committed to photographic excellence through continuing education and networking. Past symposiums have been held at Eastern Kentucky University, Kent State University, Brigham Young University, University of Florida, Vanderbilt University, Oregon Institute of Technology, and University of Texas-San Antonio.
