FACULTY AWARDS AT UH RECOGNIZE THE YEAR’S OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS
Teachers Cited for Contributions to Research, Scholarship and Learning

HOUSTON, April 21, 2004 – Several educators at the University of Houston have been honored as recipients of the 2004 Faculty Awards for their contributions to learning, research and scholarship. They were recognized at a celebratory dinner on campus last week.

The Esther Farfel Awards, the university’s highest faculty honor, has been presented to Allan Jacobson, a professor of chemistry who holds the Robert A. Welch Chair of Science. (See separate release.)

Other 2004 Faculty Awards honors and recipients:

  • The Enron Teaching Excellence Award – Lonny S. Hoffman, assistant professor of law; William F. Monroe, professor of English and associate dean of the Honors College; Carolyn Boone, associate professor of acting and directing in the School of Theatre; Charles Dalton, professor of mechanical engineering. Each receives a trophy and $5,000.
  • The John and Rebecca Moores Professorship – Mark Doty, professor of English; Paul Hardin, professor of biology and biochemistry. Each receives a five-year renewable award that includes a $10,000 annual stipend.
  • Distance Education Teaching Excellence Award – David Judkins, associate professor of English. The award carries a $5,000 prize and a trophy.
  • Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award – P. Shiv Halasyamani, assistant professor of chemistry; Paul Hardin, professor of biology and biochemistry; Steven Blanke, associate professor of biology and biochemistry. This award provides a $3,000 stipend and a plaque.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistant Award – Chad McNutt, instructional assistant in the department of biology and biochemistry; Chidiogo Madubike, lab assistant and instructor in the department of electrical and computer engineering. Each receives $1,000 and a trophy.
