FRONTIER FIESTA AT UH
SPORTS A NEW LOOK
Athletics, Alumni, Student Body Team Up to Celebrate Annual Event
HOUSTON, March 10, 2004 – Frontier Fiesta, the University
of Houston’s annual campus celebration that takes place April
1-3, will have a new look this year.
For the first time, the Houston Alumni Organization (HAO) and the
Department of Athletics will be getting in on the fun.
“We wanted to bring the entire UH family together –
faculty, staff, students, parents, sports patrons, alumni, and athletes,”
said Fiesta Director of Marketing and senior Jessica Adkins, “so
we joined forces with HAO and Athletics. For example, the Red and
White Scrimmage will coincide with Fiesta.”
The Red and White Scrimmage is an annual spring showcase of the
UH football team.
For the “Three Unforgettable Days” themed celebration,
UH student organizations and the Fiesta board will transform the
west side of Robertson Stadium into a frontier town known as “Fiesta
City.” Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to
attend. There are charges for certain entertainment, such as the
variety shows and carnival booths, as well as food and beverages.
Throughout the weekend, there will be carnival booths, Broadway-style
variety shows, musical performances, BBQ cook-off and silent auction.
Fiesta will conclude with a host of activities April 3, which is
Family Fun Day and HAO’s Cougar Family Fest. Saturday highlights
include the Red and White Scrimmage, autograph signing by UH football
players, exhibits from the American Cowboy Museum and Cherokee Society,
performances from the Polynesian dance group Te Vaka, kid zones,
and a mariachi band.
Once dubbed by Life magazine as the “Greatest College Show
on Earth,” Fiesta has been a UH tradition since the 1940s
and remains the single largest campus event in the spring. During
its height, the event attracted more than 100,000 people.
The Texas-style festival is part of a long-standing tradition at
UH, showcasing the student body’s talents. Variety shows are
the heart of celebration. The student organization-produced shows
are patterned after famous Broadway hits or original concepts. In
previous years, national recording artists such as Cory Morrow,
Kevin Fowler, Dub Miller, Choppa, Sisters Morales, and Fulanito
have performed. Teams travel from across Texas to compete in the
BBQ cook-off’s six food categories: brisket, chicken, ribs,
beans, gumbo, and fajitas.
In 1994, a scholarship program was added. As the event has grown,
so has the Frontier Fiesta Association’s ability to award
more scholarship money to deserving UH students. Recipients are
recognized for academic achievement and community involvement.
