ENRON FIASCO FOCUS OF LECTURE BY UH LAW CENTER DEAN,
RICE ACCOUNTING PROFESSOR

Editors of the first academic book examining Enron Corp.’s collapse will speak at the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business as part of its Distinguished Leaders Series Feb. 12.

Nancy Rapoport, UH Law Center dean and professor of law, and Bala Dharan, Rice University accounting professor, have assembled scholarly articles and essays in their book “Enron: Corporate Fiascos and Their Implications.” Foundation Press, a unit of West Publishing, will release the publication Feb. 9. The book explores legal, financial, ethical, managerial and corporate governance issues.

The lecture is open to Bauer, UH Law Center and Rice Jones School students, faculty, alumni, corporate partners and sponsors, invited guests and news reporters.

Rapoport, a Stanford-trained bankruptcy academic, joined the UH Law Center in 2000. She practiced bankruptcy law early in her career with Morrison & Foster after clerking with the Honorable Joseph T. Sneed of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to UH, she held positions as dean and professor at University of Nebraska College of Law, and professor of law and associate dean at The Ohio State University College of Law.

Dharan is well-known for his research and writings on financial engineering, special purpose entities, and financial statement analysis. He has testified before the Congressional House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and has written and lectured extensively on Enron and accounting issues related to energy trading, mark-to-market accounting, derivatives and risk management.

Distinguished Leader Series lectures are sponsored by Bauer College’s MBA program. CEOs and recognized authorities typically speak about real-world reflections, experiences and case histories on the challenges of strategic leadership, ethics, corporate governance, globalization, finance and investment, diversity, organization transformation, culture change and energy strategy.
