AS SUPER BOWL XXXVIII PREPARES TO KICK
OFF,
UH GETS ITS GAME FACE ON
Looking for another Super Bowl XXXVIII angle? As preparations for
the big game gear up, the University of Houston offers a number
of promising subjects for media in town to cover the event. If you
have something in mind you don’t see here, please give us
a call and we’ll work with you to make it happen.
DRUM AND DRUMMER: IN STEP WITH JANET JACKSON
When Janet Jackson performs during halftime, she’ll be accompanied
by the UH Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band and the TSU Ocean
of Soul Marching Band. Find out how this unique collaboration came
about and learn about the distinctive drum line sounds that will
highlight her version of “Rhythm Nation.” http://www.uh.edu/uhtoday/2004/01jan/011404bandspbowl.html
CONSUMER RIGHTS AND WRONGS
Ticket scalping? Price gouging on hotel rooms? Run-arounds on rental
cars and mislaid reservations at restaurants? Professor Richard
Alderman, who heads up the Center for Consumer Law at the UH Law
Center, can talk about what’s lawful and what’s merely
awful when it comes to Super Bowl problems and predicaments. He’s
also a specialist in sports law and can discuss contracts, salaries,
stadium financing and other such topics. http://www.uh.edu/media/nr/2003/12dec/121603alderman.html
COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTION
The TV commercials during Super Bowl often score more points than
the teams on the field, and the halftime activities are becoming
as important as the game itself. Professor Garth Jowett, a national
authority on media and advertising, and Betsy Gelb, an expert in
marketing, explore what this phenomenon says about American culture.
Jowett phone: 713-743-2884. E-mail: gjowett@uh.edu.
Gelb phone: 713-743-4558. E-mail: gelb@uh.edu.
DOWN THE TUBE
What makes people want to huddle together staring hypnotically at
a TV for four hours, rooting for teams they may not even care about?
Besides the beer, that is. Joseph Kotarba, a sociology professor
with a passion for popular culture, goes deep to examine the role
Super Bowl plays in our society. Phone: 713-743-3954.
E-mail: jkotarba@uh.edu.
(W)HOOPING IT UP
Jump Ball: Super Bowl weekend, UH will be the site of two dance
parties, two concerts by OutKast star Big Boi and a celebrity basketball
game. Details: http://www.uh.edu/media/nr/2004/01jan/012104cal.html.
