School of Music
Presents exceptional concerts, opera productions,
and recitals… its world-class faculty train the performers,
composers, conductors, and scholars that go on to become an important
part of the musical world both in Houston, the nation, and abroad.
With its 80-member faculty and more than 600 music
majors, the School’s thriving programs place it in the forefront
of music schools today… primary mission to educate and train
professional performers and teachers… degrees offered in theory,
performance, composition, music history, pedagogy, conducting, and
music education.
Serves the community with public concerts and programs,
such as the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival (a festival
concert is traditionally presented at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell
Pavilion at The Woodlands), the International Piano Series, and
four fully staged opera productions each year.
Alliances with the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand
Opera, Society for the Performing Arts, and others.
Attracts students from around the world…
approximately 80 percent of graduates remain in area, providing
a major infusion of superbly trained musicians to professional performance
organizations, churches, public and private schools, and studios—every
aspect of the city’s musical life.
During the 2001-2002 academic year, the Moores
School of Music offered 106 concerts and guest recitals, with an
estimated attendance of 30,000… additional events hosted on
campus at the Moores Opera House bring the total number of events
on campus to approximately 300.
Off campus, an estimated 136,000 Houston area patrons
attended performances by individual artists, the Wind Ensemble,
the Cougar Marching Band, and others.
