Subject: Staff Excellence Awards

Each year, the University of Houston
recognizes a select group of its employees
with Staff Excellence Awards. This year’s
awards will be presented to outstanding
staff members at an awards luncheon on May
13, 2008. The awards ceremony will be
followed by the Staff Awards Picnic on May
20, 2008.
Who can make nominations?
Any University of Houston employee or
student may make nominations for Staff
Excellence Awards using the attached form.

Who may be nominated for an excellence
award?
All benefits-eligible, non-teaching
employees with at least three years
university service are eligible for
nomination, regardless of job classification
or level, including those who are paid from
the University of Houston System budget.
What are the qualifications on which the
awards are based?
The award recognizes meritorious
service, dedication, and contribution to the
university beyond the requirements or
expectations of the job. Characteristics of
an employee’s performance which contribute
to excellence include:
- superior job performance and a high degree
of proficiency in areas of responsibility;;
- outstanding personal traits such as
dedication, loyalty, reliability, courtesy,
honesty, and initiative;
- continuous demonstration of service
concepts necessary to support the department
and university;
- initiative in making improvements in work
methods, standards, or operations; or
developing new programs, services, or cost
savings which enhance or support the
department and university; and
- ability to work cooperatively as a member
of the work team.
What is the deadline for submission of
nominations?
The completed nominations must
be submitted to the Human Resources
Department by the extended deadline of
March, 24 2008 no later than
5:00pm. In addition to the form and the
supervisor’s comments and approval, up to
four additional recommendation forms may be
submitted with the nomination, no other
supporting documentation will be accepted.
When completing the recommendation form, you
must hold descriptions to 100 words or less
The Selection Committee appointed by the
President will evaluate the nomination
materials and select six Staff Excellence
Award winners in the categories indicated
below. The award recipients will receive a
Staff Excellence Award certificate and
$1,000.
2 awards Non-Exempt – office and clerical
2 awards Non-Exempt – technical, service,
craft
2 awards Exempt – administrative and
professional
All previous Excellence Award recipients
will be eligible for nomination for the C.F.
McElhinney Distinguished Service Award, the
highest award for exemplary staff
contribution to the University. The
recipient of this award will receive a
Distinguished Service Award plaque and
$2,500.
The University is indebted to its support of
staff who contributes tirelessly and often
invisibly to the education of University of
Houston students. These awards represent a
meaningful and tangible way in which we can
acknowledge and reward our fellow employees
for their hard work and dedication. We hope
that each of will take this opportunity to
tell us which of your co-workers deserves a
Staff Excellence Award.
