MAY 2007 - BUSINESS NOTES AND NEWS

Training
HR now offers In-Depth I-9 Training. All department representatives who complete I-9s should attend. This training session includes examples, discussion, review, and your very own desk manual. Please contact Sandra Medellin at smedellin@uh.edu, to attend one of the sessions. Class sizes are limited to 20 to facilitate discussion and practice time.

Coming soon to a training room near you: New and Improved PAR Training.
Updates to the PAR manuals will be available on the HR website soon. For those new to personnel action processing (PARs and PRFs), the training and manuals will roll out shortly - keep an eye out!

Short Work Break or Termination or Leave of Absence - Which action to use?
Short Work Break (SWB) should only be used for employees who are due insurance for the Summer semester because they taught during the Spring semester. Leave of Absence (LOA) should be the action used any other time that insurance eligible students or benefits eligible staff do not work. This will trigger a process to notify ERS of the leave, and notify the employee of the option to continue insurance at their cost. LOA can also be used for non-benefit eligible staff or students who are not working for a short period of time, and you know they are returning. However, if you are not sure of their return, the assignment should be Terminated.

Rehiring recently terminated employees is now easier. A new I-9 will only be required for rehires with a break in service of more than one year, or the information on the I-9 has changed or expired. Otherwise, HR will update the current I-9 form on file in HR. When creating PARs for recent rehires, please put this statement in the remarks, "Rehire with less than one year break." We have also eliminated the need to attach personal data sheets for rehires, as employees can update their information in PASS at any time. Please remind all employees to review and update their information in PASS on a regular basis.

Supervisor Training is Here!
The Human Resource Department is now offering Coaching, Discipline & Documentation training to leaders across campus. This course introduces a methodology for facilitating coaching and disciplinary sessions with employees. Department Managers interested in setting up training in their area should contact their assigned HR Generalist to schedule a session.
