MARCH 2007 - BUSINESS
NOTES AND NEWS

Training Operations Survey
Training Operations, the new Business
Services department, would like your
guidance as it develops new training
opportunities for faculty and staff. Many of
you have already provided your feedback on
the training we could be offering or ways
that we can improve our current business
process training. We’d like to formally
document the need for training and develop a
strategy for improvement. If you’d like to
help us with these efforts, please complete
our short survey at the below link. We’ll
publish the survey results in next month’s
newsletter and keep you posted on the
department’s game plan for developing new
training classes in future issues.

Understanding UH Business
The second Understanding UH Business series
will wrap up Thursday, March 8, 2007 as
participants overview of the annual,
administrative reporting requirements and
why they are necessary, receive information
and discuss the certifying signature’s role
in the transaction approval process, and
complete team-building exercises on ethical
conduct and fraud in the university
environment.
We will begin preparations this summer for
our third installment of the course, which
will kick off in mid-October.
What is the Understanding UH Business course
and why is it important?
Understanding UH Business is a six-week
course, which provides explanations for the
key business transactions and processes at
the university. Have you ever asked the
following when processing a transaction:
1. Why can’t I just use any account as long
as the voucher gets processed?
2. What is budget checking and why do we
require it?
3. What is a liability? What’s an asset?
4. Why is it important to read a balance
sheet?
5. What is the importance of fund codes?
6. Who is Accounts Payable and why do they
tell me what to do?
7. What is Finance’s role and what is my
role and how do we work together?
8. How do I maximize the use of the
university’s financial system?
If you’ve wanted to know the answers to the
above or wanted your staff to know the
answers to the above questions, then
Understanding UH Business will provide a
unique perspective. The class instructors
will walk participants through how
transactions flow, who processes them, why
transactions and the procedures for them
exist, and what is the global effect – both
internally and externally-of these
transactions that flow through various
departments and the PeopleSoft System.
Who can attend this class?
Anyone interested in developing an
understanding of the university’s business
processes is invited to attend. To express
interest and be nominated to attend this
class, employees in the colleges should
notify their college administrator and
administrative personnel in the non-academic
divisions should contact their division
administrator to be nominated to attend this
course. Questions about the curriculum or
program should be directed to Sandra
Medellin at 713-743-5753.
