France has one of the richest European histories, cultures, and literatures, and its artistic and philosophical thought has had a great impact on Western civilization. French was for a long time the language of international diplomacy, and continues to be widely spoken throughout the world. It is the official language of more than 20 countries and is, with English, the only language spoken on all five continents. Historically, France and the French language have had an enormous influence on American society. This program prepares students for advanced level courses in language, culture and civilization, and literature. The French program has sponsored a summer program in France for over 20 years. The present location of the French summer program is Angers, a university town of 30,000 students, voted “most attractive city in France.” Classes are held at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest, where students may earn 6 credit hours at the intermediate or advanced levels, and participate in excursions to Paris as well as other well-known sites in France.
Graduates have a variety of career opportunities in firms that deal with international trade, U.S. companies that have branches in France, airlines, and in education or government service. Many pursue graduate work in French, eventually teaching the language and culture in universities or colleges. With state certification, high school teaching is also a possibility.
