Math Placement Exam Information

The University of Houston conducts all Math Placement testing on-line.  All students enrolling at the University of Houston for fall 2008 will take the math placement exam on-line.  This is a great opportunity for you to take your math placement exam away from the hustle and bustle of Orientation and at your convenience.

Your Honors College advisors require that you take the math placement exam PRIOR to attending any summer Orientation conference or meeting with an Honors advisor.

Where do I go on-line to take the exam?
Log into https://www.casa.uh.edu/CourseWare/Login.aspx and register as a new user.

What if I want to take Honors Calculus?

You should still take the placement exam.  Further information regarding your eligibility for Honors Calculus will be provided at Orientation.

There are 3 placement exams. Which one do I take?
The Honors advising staff recommends that you take the placement exam best suited to your experience level and your major. Our recommendations are as follows:

Should Take Placement into MATH 1431
Computer Science, Engineering (all majors), Math, Physics

Should Take Placement into MATH 1313, 1314, 1330, or 2311
All other majors, including Education, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Liberal Arts,

Natural Science & Mathematics majors not listed above, Social Sciences and Technology

If you think you might need to take the Placement in MATH 1310 (College Algebra) exam, please contact one of our Honors College advisors before taking the exam at 713.743.9010.

Are practice exams/questions available?
Yes, you'll find that the Math Placement website contains a number of detailed practice problems, tailored to the subject matter of each placement test.

I'm taking the Calculus AP exam (AB or BC) in May. Do I need to take the placement test?
Yes. Although a passing score on the AP exam will earn you college credit, we won't know your score until July. In the meantime, we recommend you take the placement exam.

I have already taken college math at my community college. Do I have to take the placement test?
No. You already have college level credit and we should be able to determine your next math course based on your previous work.

If I fail the Placement Exam, can I retake it?
Yes, you can have up to two attempts on any math placement exam. But take the exam seriously the first time. Review the practice problems and ensure that you have adequate time to devote to taking the test before you sit down to take it. The Math Department will accept the higher of the two placement exam scores.

Should I bring my Math Placement exam score with me to Orientation?
Yes. Please know the Honors advisors will be verifying that students have taken the exam through the CASA website in the week prior to each orientation conference.
