FAQ about Orientation

How do I register for orientation?
Following acceptance to The Honors College, incoming students are contacted in April, directing them to this site for Orientation information.   You will need to register with The Honors College in addition to registering with the Dean of Students office for a summer orientation conference.
Is Honors orientation the same as UH orientation?
Orientation for The Honors College coincides with the orientation provided by the Dean of Students office. You will participate in the activities provided by the University, and if you are already accepted to Honors, you will receive one-on-one registration assistance from Honors advisors and current Honors students.  You will also receive a tour of The Honors College.
Do I need to register separately for UH orientation?
Yes, and you can register for both on-line.  If you have questions about your reservation status with the university, call the Orientation Hotline at 713.743.5475. For questions regarding your Honors College orientation status, call the Honors College Student Services office at 713.743.9010.
How will I receive advising for Honors courses?
The Honors College conducts advising and registration for its new students as part of the UH orientation conferences. Refer to the Dean of Students website for a list of dates and participating colleges.
Be sure to choose a conference when both The Honors College and the college of your major are participating. Students are invited to The Honors College after 4 p.m. on the first day of each conference to sign up for an advising time. On the second day, all new Honors students return to The Honors College for advising and registration.

What if I'm a transfer student?
Transfer students should attend a transfer orientation conference. If you are a transfer student, please contact an advisor in The Honors College office at 713.743.9010 to schedule an advising appointment prior to your conference date.
What if I'm an out-of-state student?
Out-of-state students will participate in mail registration if they are unable to attend one of the orientation conferences. To register by mail, complete the Honors College on-line registration form and mark the mail registration option. Indicate test scores, if available, and/or previously completed college coursework that would affect your registration. You will NOT need to register for a conference with the university's Dean of Students office, but you MUST return your Honors College Orientation R.S.V.P. no later than May 25th.

An Honors academic advisor will contact you by phone to discuss your degree requirements and course selections. We will register you for Honors courses and mail your class schedule to you.  Prior to your registration, however, you will need to take the University's mandatory math placement exam.  Additional information on how to register for this exam is available here
What foreign language level do I begin if I took a foreign language in high school?
Students who have completed two or more years of foreign language in high school are required to take a language placement exam without credit before enrolling in a foreign language course.  It is recommended that Houston-area students take the language placement exam before attending orientation. The exams can be arranged by contacting the University Testing Services office at 713.743.5444. Students also may schedule a placement exam for the afternoon of the second day of the orientation conference; however, space may be limited.
What is the last registration deadline?
The Honors College will not register students after August 1st.  If you plan to attend UH as an Honors student for the fall semester, you must attend either a May, June, or July orientation conference or make arrangements for mail registration (available only to students outside the greater Houston area). If you fail to register through Honors prior to the July deadline, but still wish to participate in The Honors College for the spring semester, you MUST notify the College in writing and request that your file be considered for spring admission.
What do I need to bring to orientation?
First, read the University and Honors College Core Curriculum Requirements. These requirements apply to all Honors students and will help you to understand the advising process at orientation. Second, you are required to take the math placement prior to attending an orientation conference.  You may also need to take an a THEA exam (to satisfy TSI requirements) and an English placement exam, unless you are exempt
