COMD 1333: Introduction to Communication Disorders
Cr. 3. (3-0). The field of communication disorders including history of professions in communication disorders and overview of a variety of disorder areas and career opportunities.

COMD 2301: American Sign Language III
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: COMD 1302. Intermediate level instruction in communication using sign language.

COMD 2302: American Sign Language IV
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: COMD 1302. Intermediate level instruction in communication using sign language.

COMD 2338: Phonetics
Cr. 3. (3-0). Analysis of spoken English in articulatory, perceptual, and acoustic terms, with emphasis on general American dialect and its phonetic transcription.

COMD 2339: Speech, Hearing, and Language Development of the Normal Child
Cr. 3. (3-0). Normal acquisition of speech and language structure including dimensions of hearing from the period of infancy through early adolescence.

COMD 2350: Survey and Research Methods (also COMM 2300)
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: MATH 1310, COMM 1302, and sophomore standing or consent of instructor. Principles and practices of critical analysis of theoretical, applied, and clinical literature in communication and selected disorders.

COMD 2376: Anatomy and Physiology of the Vocal Mechanism
Cr. 3. (3-0). Structure and function of the neuromuscular systems involved in phonation, speech and respiration.

COMD 2380: Professional Writing in Communication Disorders
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: COMD major, completion of or concurrent enrollment in COMD 3381, and completion of or concurrent enrollment in COMM 4382 or 4489. This course will address three areas of writing: basic mechanics, clinical reports, and research papers necessary to be successful professionally and academically.

COMD 3301: Deaf Culture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Deaf culture: behaviors, beliefs, psychology, education, language, myths, history and attitude toward others, from the perspective of deaf people and those who work with them.

COMD 3371: Phonological Disorders
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: COMD 1333, 2338, and prior or concurrent enrollment in COMD 2339. Basic principles and methods of evaluating and treating disorders of phonology.

COMD 3381: Fundamentals of Audiology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: credit for or concurrent enrollment in COMD 2380. Techniques and instrumentation used for evaluation of hearing. Rationale for audiometric tests, practice in testing, and nonmedical interpretation of results.

COMD 3383: Language Disorders
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: COMD 2339: Theories and research related to language development and language disorders in pre-school children. General diagnostic and remedial approaches for children with language-based problems.

COMD 3399-4399: Senior Honors Thesis
Cr. 3 per semester. Prerequisite: approval of department chair. Both COMD 3399 and 4399 must be taken before credit is received for either, and the courses must be taken in sequence.

COMD 4198:4398: Special Problems
Cr. 1-3 per semester, or more by concurrent enrollment. Prerequisite: approval of department chair. Undergraduate credit only.

COMD 4333: Neurogenic Communication Disorders
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: COMD 2376 and completion of or concurrent enrollment in COMD 2380, or consent of instructor. Survey of neurogenic communication disorders, including aphasia, motor speech disorders, and cognitive disorders.

COMD 4382: Management for Individuals with Hearing Impairment
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: COMD 2380 and 3381 or consent of instructor. Principles, methodology, and procedures used with children and adults living with hearing impairment. Includes amplification devices, communication skills training, educational programming and current issues.

COMD 4385: Speech Science
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: COMD 2338 and COMD 2376, PHYS 2340, and approval of a COMD degree plan, or consent of instructor. Theoretical and physiological aspects of speech production and perception. Contributions of respiratory, laryngeal, velopharyngeal and articulatory systems to speech production; physical and speech acoustics; speech across the life span.

COMD 4390: Clinical Procedures II
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: COMD 3371, 3383, 4489, approved degree plan, and 3.0 GPA in major or consent of instructor. Advanced conceptual models and application strategies for clinical management.

COMD 4489: Clinical Procedures I
Cr. 4. (4-0). Prerequisites: COMD 2380, 3371, 3383, approved degree plan, and 3.0 GPA in major or consent of the instructor. Conceptual models and application strategies for clinical management.
