HDFS 2317: Introduction to Human Development and Intervention
Cr. 3. (3-0). Multidisciplinary integration of biological, psychological, and cultural approaches to the study of life-span human development; introduction to the development-in-context approach to understanding human development; focus on applied problems related to delivery of human services.
HDFS 3317: Prenatal and Infant Development
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: HDFS 2317 or consent of instructor. Multidisciplinary integration of biomedical, psychosocial, and cultural perspectives on prenatal and infancy period; implications of early determinants in relation to later development.
HDFS 3318: Human Ecology and Adult Development
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: HDFS 2317 or consent of instructor. Multidisciplinary integration of biological, psychological, and cultural perspectives on adult development and aging; emphasis on development-in-context approach to understanding adulthood; and focus on applied problems related to adult development.
HDFS 3350: Child Development Practicum
Cr. 3. (2-3). Prerequisite: HDFS 2317. Observation of infants and young children to assess motor, psychosocial, and cognitive development in institutional settings including day care, preschool, and kindergarten.
HDFS 4198:4398: Special Problems in Human Development Studies and Family
Cr. 1 or 3 per semester. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.
HDFS 4315: Analysis of Community Resources and Human Services
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: HDCS 3300 and HDCS 4300, HDFS 2317, and six additional hours in HDFS. Analysis of community resources of various agencies that deliver human services in the urban metropolis. Strategies for success in the work place.
HDFS 4316: The Development of Social Relations in the Family
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: HDFS 2317 or consent of instructor. Multidisciplinary research related to the development of social relations and patterns of interaction in the context of the family and in alternative care-giving settings.
HDFS 4317: Theory and Practice in Programs for Young Children I
Cr. 3. (3-1). Prerequisites: HDFS 2317 and HDFS 3350 or consent of instructor. Child development research and theory for early education. Evaluating developmental progress in physical-knowledge activities, group games, and group time including social and moral discussions. Intervention strategies and the teacher-child relationship.
HDFS 4318: Human Ecology of Parenting
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: HDFS 2317 or consent of instructor. Multidisciplinary overview of parents in contemporary society, emphasis on development-in-context approach to the study of parenting; review of research on parenting; and focus on strategies for intervention in a variety of settings.
HDFS 4319: Theory and Practice in Programs for Young Children II
Cr. 3. (3-1). Prerequisites: HDFS 2317, HDFS 3350, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in HDFS 4317 or consent of instructor. Child development research and theory for early education. Intervention strategies and evaluation of developmental progress in number activities, pretend play, art, music, reading, and writing.
HDFS 4320: Evaluating Educational Programs for Young Children
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: HDFS 4317. Comparative analysis of educational programs for young children; underlying assumptions about child development; and theoretical and practical issues.
HDFS 4393: Internship in Human Development and Family Studies
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: HDFS major, senior standing, concurrent enrollment in HDFS 4394, and for placement in Human Development Lab School, HDFS 4317 and HDFS 4319. Theoretical approaches to the study of the individual and the family through a supervised practicum in the student's area of emphasis.
HDFS 4394: Internship in Human Development and Family Studies
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: HDFS major, senior standing, concurrent enrollment in HDFS 4393, and for placement in Human Development Lab School, HDFS 4317 and HDFS 4319. Application of theoretical approaches to the study of the individual and the family through a supervised practicum in the student's area of emphasis.
HDFS 4397: Selected Topics in Human Development and Family Studies
Cr. 3. Prerequisites: junior standing in HDFS and permission of the instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of six semester hours of credit.
