Majors in Spanish must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.00 grade point average in all courses attempted in the major and must demonstrate or attain at least 2302 (fourth semester) level proficiency in a second foreign language.
The department encourages Spanish majors and minors to participate in study abroad programs. Up to 12 advanced semester credit hours of study abroad coursework earned through affiliated study abroad programs may be applied toward the fulfillment of requirements for the Spanish major and up to 6 semester credit hours of study abroad coursework may be applied toward fulfillment of the requirements for the Spanish minor.
Students interested in studying abroad should consult with the University Office of International Studies and Programs and with the department's undergraduate advisor.
In addition to completing the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, students majoring in Spanish must complete 27 semester hours in Spanish at the advanced level (3000-4000). Spanish majors must take a minimum 15 credit hours in residence with the Department of Hispanic Studies, not including credit by exam or study abroad. The Spanish Program offers two basic language programs that satisfy the foreign language requirement and prepare students for upper-division courses in linguistics, culture, literature, business and other practical areas:

The department also offers a Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish. For general graduate admissions requirements and listing of courses, contact the respective graduate advisors in the Department of Hispanic Studies and consult the Graduate and Professional Studies catalog.
Students minoring in Spanish must complete at least 15 semester hours in Spanish, of which 12 must be advanced. Nine semester hours, including six advanced, must be completed in residence with the Department of Hispanic Studies, not including credit by exam or study abroad. Spanish minors must earn a 2.00 minimum cumulative grade point average on all Spanish courses attempted at the University of Houston.
Students minoring in Spanish for the Business Professions must complete at least 15 semester hours in Spanish, all of which must be advanced, including SPAN 3341, 3342, plus one of the following courses: SPAN 3312, 3373, 3374, 3375, 3384 or 4341. Nine semester hours, including six advanced, must be completed in residence with the Department of Hispanic Studies not including credit by exam or study abroad. Students must earn a 2.50 minimum cumulative grade point average on all Spanish courses attempted in the minor at the University of Houston.
