All Level (EC-12) Certification

All Level (Early Childhood through Twelfth Grade) Teacher Certification

Students who wish to pursue certification which allows them to teach children at all levels in public schools may do so in several ways.

In order to pursue certification in Music or Art at all levels, students must major in Music or Art in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and should seek advising from advisors for one of these majors. Professional Development Sequences (QUEST) in the College of Education are offered in conjunction with degree programs in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Courses are jointly approved by these colleges and the College of Education. For certification within a degree program in either of these fields, see the specific college section of this catalog. Students must carefully follow the degree plan prepared by their college.

Preparation for certification for Special Education at all levels is available through the Interdisciplinary Studies major or the Human Development and Family Studies major in the College of Education.

All-level certification prepares prospective educators to provide services to students with disabilities in a variety of settings from ages 3 to 22 years.

Coursework for this certificate targets the legal mandates and decisions that pertain to special education, exceptionalities, classroom-based assessment, effective instructional and social interventions for students with disabilities, instructional technology, and student/program evaluation.

Specific information about this certificate can be obtained by meeting with an advisor from either Human Development and Family Studies or Interdisciplinary Studies.

Students pursue certification in coordination with the teacher preparation program, QUEST (Quality Urban Education for Students and Teachers), which readies undergraduate students to be certified as teachers in a variety of fields.

For more information regarding QUEST, go to www.coe.uh.edu/about/quest/ or contact an advisor in room 256 of Farish Hall.
